Rules Questions

When designing intelligent items, do the spells on them have to come from one class. Or can you mix and match. If you choose a cleric spell and a witch spell. Do you need to boost int and wis? It says dc is created using highest stat.

Haven't seen a clear answer to these questions.

Well, this can vary greatly based on one simple question:

What does the GM say?

Magic item creation is iffy. If the rules there were hard and fast, it would be far too easy to break the entire system. As is, the code is more of what you'd call guidelines, than actual rules. If you're the GM, do what you want with your item, who cares about the technicals? If you're a player, just ask your GM for his opinion. Really, based off the number of ways to get spells on a different list, not to mention the number of ways it's possible to get a spell list to go off of a different ability score, just go with one ability score for them all.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

My DM is allowing me to craft my own item following existing rules. If ask him my questions, you'll find a similar post here or on reddit asking the same questions. It's just easier to ask myself, then if i can find something definitive, i can link to the proper rules when i send him the final result.

I'm not looking to break the system, just clarification if someone has seen it.

Which spells in particular are you looking for? It's possible you could find them all on one list. Also, I'm not aware of any rule saying all spells on an item have to come from one class. In fact, there's a few items who list construction requirements from multiple (can't think of any off the top of my head, but I know they are there).

Keep in mind that if you're adding a spell you can't personally cast, it increases the DC of the crafting check by 5.
So if you're a wizard making an intelligent cloak that casts Cure Light Wounds 3/day, and Bless 3/day, that's +10 to the crafting check (2x +5)

Note also that the cloak is the caster of these spells, and these spells are cast on the cloak's turn in the round.

I personally think it's a conflict of interest for you to roleplay both your character and your character's intelligent cloak. Discuss it with your GM, and perhaps have another player play your cloak, or the GM can NPC-it.
