"What" is Whalebone Pilk?

Skull & Shackles

The stat block for Whalebone Pilk lists him as a Male breath taker fighter medium undead (aquatic).

I'm curious, what type of undead creature is he exactly? Is he a unique undead specific to the adventure? Or is a "Breath Taker" the type of creature he is?

I can't find any official PF source describing what a Breath Taker is. The stat block mentions (Dead Man's Chest 79). Is this reference to the 3rd party sourcebook? If so, I find it really odd that Paizo is using material from a 3rd party book. I don't own that book, so I can't even check if this is a reference for a Breath Taker.

Anyone have any clue about this?

Yes, it is 3rd party, Paizo does it all the time. :-)

It's a monster from this book. It's not unusual for Paizo to use third party material. There are plenty of creatures from earlier APs that use monster templates from Green Ronin's Advanced Bestiary. Pilk's stat block contains everything you'd need to run the encounter as written.

Interesting. Thanks guys. I have never DMed a PF module so I never realized that they included 3rd party stuff in their official prints. That's actually kind of cool and shows yet again why Paizo is a great company (they show support for other companies).

Since I don't own Dead Man's Chest, I don't know the background of a Breath Taker. I'm just curious as to what kind of undead they are similar to so that I could better describe to PCs what Whalebone Pilk is exactly.

Can someone give me an idea here? I don't want to introduce "Breath Takers" in my game exactly, so I don't want to refer to him as one. What could I refer Whalebone Pike as? Are Breath Takers more similar to Ghouls? Or are they like Wights or Wraiths? Or do they closer resemble something else entirely?
