What are the specifications for Light, Medium, and Heavy Loads in relation to character size?

Pathfinder First Edition General Discussion

Pathfinder question:

I was looking in the Core Rulebook, Ultimate Equipment, and Hero's Handbook but I couldn't find the weight specifications for characters. Does anyone know which pages it's on? (Alternately, a messageboard post explaining weight in Pathfinder.)

I don't want my medium-sized character to be encumbered by all the stuff she's carrying.

Thanks in advance!

Carrying capacity is based in strength, and the table for medium sized creatures is listed on page 171 of the CRB. The multipliers for being larger or smaller or having multiple legs are on page 170. Also here: http://paizo.com/pathfinderRPG/prd/coreRulebook/additionalRules.html

Do you take the clothes you're wearing into that calculation?

If a backpack weighs 2 lbs, do you only count 2 lbs if the contents are less than 2 lbs? Or do you count the backpack as 2 lbs regardless of how much weight is in it?

Depends on how much of a hardass your GM is about encumbrance.

@Ventiine I can't find a citation for it but I've always played that you get a free set of clothes that don't count against your carrying capacity. Maybe someone can confirm.

The backpack adds it's own 2 lbs regardless of what you store in it, as far as I know. I just checked and it works that way in the program Hero Lab (but that is not an official source).

@Mark Thomas, please take this only in the spirit of friendly discussion, not to start a quarrel, but why do GM's that use the encumbrance rules have to be characterized as hardass? I know it's a popular system to hand waive away, but I like it myself (as a player and as a GM). Some of us just have a more simulationist bent and can find it breaks immersion to not use it.

Also it plays a role in balance and character design. For example I have seen PC's show up with a strength dumped down below 8 and they are loaded down with gear. Then they get surprised when I ask if they remembered to apply their penalties on rolls. I don't like feeling like the bad guy but isn't it a fair trade off to put enough points in strength to carry what you need?

Encumbrance rules and strength rating.

I can not find it in the PRD, but there was a discussion on this a long time ago and the consensus was that in 3.5, clothing did not count, but in Pathfinder it does.
