I personally use the item value max of the "allowed to borrow or use from others" of 50 gp, it makes things...interesting.
Oread rikishi (aka sumo wreslter, a monk alt class I have been working on and testing for my 3pp for a while) "Jagged Mountain" is the name he gives, with vow of poverty and vow of truth. 6th item choice, oread spiked flesh gem, actually caused me to come up with a heck of a back story, just that one not very expensive item...
that said, the gear difference is still really telling on the mechanical level, my AC is low for my level, and am glad I have normal monk saves, not unchained.
Item bonuses, what are those? ;)

many people, including my group, usually took that 6th item to mean of any value, but we also tend to give that item alot of story importance. Things like a faintly magical cloak that is the characters only clue to his birth parents. or the weapon master monk's sword that he constantly seeks to improve because it was the last relic of his destroyed temple, and he vowed to use it to kill the creature/raiders who burned the temple in the first place.
