templates and subtypes

Rules Questions

When a templates changes the type, does the subtypes disappear or stay ?

Example : from monstrous "humanoid (cold)" to "undead (cold)" or to "undead" ?

Thanks

Do you have a specific template in mind? Because it depends on the template. For example, Half-Celestial says:

Quote:

"Half-celestial" is an inherited or acquired template that can be added to any living, corporeal creature with an Intelligence score of 4 or more. A half-celestial creature retains the base creature's statistics and special abilities except as noted here.

Type: The creature's type changes to outsider (native). Do not recalculate HD, BAB, or saves.

No mention of changing subtypes, so the creatures original subtypes are retained.

The zombie template says:

Quote:
Type: The creature's type changes to undead. It retains any subtype except for alignment subtypes (such as good) and subtypes that indicate kind. It does not gain the augmented subtype. It uses all the base creature's statistics and special abilities except as noted here.

So any subtype that is alignment based or is kind based (like the human, elf, and orc subtypes) are lost. The rest are retained.

dread ghoul applied to a winter hag !

In that case:

Quote:

“Dread Ghoul” is an acquired template that can be added to any living creature (referred to hereafter as the base creature). A dread ghoul uses all the base creature's statistics and special abilities except as noted here.

Type: The creature's type changes to undead. Do not recalculate base attack bonuses, saves, or skill points.

It keeps the creatures stat except as noted, and does not say subtypes are lost. Therefor, all subtypes are kept.

Ok thanks !
