Charging on a Chicken

Rules Questions

Hello everyone,

I have an halfling eldritch guardian with a chicken familiar with the mauler archetype.

I spent feats into mounted combat, using the chicken as mount.

Chickens, from the bestiary, have the Drift ability, so its flight has to start and end on the ground. Can I use this momevement to charge?

Do I get the higher ground if I fly over enemies' head?

Is this real life?

Unless you have a way to ride a tiny creature with your small character i do not see how this even begins to be possible.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Mauler archetype makes you transform it to medium with Battle Form for an indefinite amount of time.

Yes, you can use a Fly speed to charge. The Chicken's Drift ability dictates that it needs to be grounded at the end of its Fly movement, so as long as you can meet that requirement, charging with the Chicken's Fly speed is allowed.

I'm not sure what the rules are for [mount moves from position x to position z] [rider makes an attack at position y, which is a square between positions x and z], but as long as that's allowed, you can basically fly over the target's head, making your attack at the top of the arch. Just remember that this maneuver (if allowed at all) can't be combined with a Charge, because you end your movement on a charge before making your attack roll. So, you can't be above the target's head AND grounded at the same time.

You can bet the farm on it ;)

ASsuming I have Ride-by attack, would it function normally?

My concern is that movement starts from grounded square and ends on grounded square.

The straight line wouldn't be an arch but, all adjacent squares would be all on the same height, being the ground.

So If i was riding, per say, a griphon, that has the ability to end turn flying. The charge would be straight air-air end to end.

Do I explain myself?

Ride-by Attack would let you attack with the high ground in the way I described above, but you wouldn't be able to do it as a charge, because, as you said, it wouldn't be a straight line. Although it would be a straight line looking at the path from top down, which MIGHT work? I'm not sure; ascent/descent with movement is always weird in Pathfinder.

Yes, with a Griffon, you could easily use Ride-by Attack while 5' in the air no problem. The problem with the chicken is that it needs to start and end its movement on a grounded surface, necessitating TWO 5' deviations from the straight path. I'd say no as a GM, but I'm not sure if there are any official rules on it, being a Fly movement.

Indeed. The charge must still be a straight line.

Barring perfect setup, where you Drift off a hill, fly over your enemy, and land on the ground behind them, it will be incredibly difficult to gain the +1 for higher ground.

A+ for effort (and comedy), though!

EDIT: totally forgot about Wheeling Charge. Problem solved =)

I've got that but later in the build. Should get that before then.

The character is intended for comedic effect for a little novel I'm writing alongside building the characters for actual play :D
