Animal companions and aging?

Advice

How would you deal with the issue of an animal companion aging in a campaign that takes place over a long period of time or has time skips?

Many of these animals naturally die in less than 15 years.

Silver Crusade

"If a druid releases her companion from service, she may gain a new one by performing a ceremony requiring 24 uninterrupted hours of prayer in the environment where the new companion typically lives. This ceremony can also replace an animal companion that has perished."

I'd assume an animal companion would be released from the strain of adventuring when it would be old enough to have penalties. Or it dies and the druid performs the same 24 hour ritual anyway.
