Theliah Strongarm's Guide To Designing Armors

This is not a point-based system and has yet to be play-tested. Discuss with your GM if this system fits in his or her's campaign.
Step 1: Determine Concept. (This includes name and short description)
Step 2: Determine type (Heavy, Light, or Medium).
Step 3: Determine AC bonus: Max +4 (Light), Max +6 (Medium), Max +9 (Heavy).
Step 4: Determine Check Penalty. (Min. -2 Medium, -5 Heavy, 0 Light.)
Step 5: Determine Max Dex Bonus: (Max +8 (Light), +3 (Medium), +1 (Heavy)).
Step 6: Determine Arcane Spell Failure Chance: Max 0% (Light), Max 20% (Medium), Max 40% (Heavy).
Step 7: Determine Max Base Speed: 30' or 20' (Small or smaller creatures)(Light), 20' or 15'* (Small or smaller creatures)(Medium and Heavy).
*remember that Medium creatures with base land speed of 20' are not affected by the normal rule for smaller creatures.
Step 8: Determine Weight; Min. 10lbs (Light), Min. 35lbs (Medium), 45lbs and above (Heavy).
Step 9: Determine Cost (Variable)
Step 10: Compare with published armors to see if your armor is balanced.
Step 11: Play-test.
Step 12: Enjoy!
This guide is designed to be worked side-by-side with your GM, and may be imbalanced if used improperly. This guide can be used to design shields, but isn't designed for that use and the shield may be slightly clunky.

One comparison that should be made is AC bonus + max dex bonus. With very few exceptions this is 8 for light, 9 for medium, and 10 for heavy armor.

Sort of. For Medium it's actually half and half 8/9 (armored coat the lone exception at 7) and for light 8 is the most common but it's only about half the total number of armors (with the rest being 6, 7, 9 and two with no max) and 8 is actually the most common for heavy armor.

The thing is most of those armors kind of suck so we only really talk about the best options.

That's why I made this flat-rate, as those "Few Exceptions" tend to bug many a player (me included). I was trying to avoid the problems the Weapon Creation System had with the "no firearms" deal, and made it much looser.

Those "few exceptions" are light armors with an AC bonus of 1 and no max dex bonus. Apart from those the maxima I list hold for all armors in UE. Anything that exceeds these values without magic or special materials is crossing a strong design limit and needs to be very carefully examined by the GM.

As written this appears to allow light armor with 4AC and 8 max dex, and does not allow for those heavy armors with 2 max dex. This is why I brought up the AC + max dex pattern.

Ah. I see what you're getting at now. Should I change the Max Dex bonus to 0 then for light armors?
