Map Folio Worth It?

Kingmaker

Pretty much as the title says. Given that the map folio is now only in downloadable format is it worth it (in your opinion) to purchase if you are running KM?

My KM campaign is kicking off next month and the biggest issue I have found so far is finding a map of the Stolen Lands that doesn't have a bunch of markings on it already. I was thinking the Folio might well have that, but didn't know how well it would show up on a tablet. I'm not the greatest at extracting and such, but that's a possibility I suppose. Still more hoping to be able to simply flip over the tablet when needed to reference something. Only other thing I have is the pdf maps from the Golarion Campaign Setting which are much larger in scale than simply the Stolen Lands of course and which wouldn't be all that helpful at that point.

What markings are you looking to avoid, and how big do you need the images to be?

They have the 'fixed' terrain marked. The mountains, cities, rivers, etc, all with names attached to them. What's not on them is the encounter locations.

Personally, I and my players didn't like the concept of seeing exactly where the river begins and ends - it took away from the 'map the unmapped wilderness' feeling. Your mileage may vary.

If all you want is the rough campaign area map to be shown digitally on a tablet for a broad outline, 10 seconds of Google Image searching 'Stolen Lands Map' produces several useful results.

Thanks for the replies. Mainly I am trying to avoid giving away too much of things that are going to key for the party to find, like showing the Stag Lord's fort (even if its not named), etc. Rivers and mountains are not too big of a deal, but I do see where it could take away from the whole "untamed wilderness" feel of it.

As for size, I'm not looking for anything too big. Ideally most of the images could fit on a single, readable, screen of an iPad. Sounds like Google might be the right approach. Thanks!

I have the Map Folio, and can confirm for you that it doesn't contain any encounter locations, even fixed structures like the Stag Lord's fort.

Only, set, civilised areas like the town of Varnhold appear, and even then it's pretty much Varnhold, Oleg's Trading Post, and a few cities where the party should have a pretty good idea where they are right from the start of the campaign.

My personal opinion is that the Map Folio is largely useless (Kingmaker even more so than the rest, as it has no dungeon maps in it) - we went with the blank hex map to give players the fun of finding out where the forest began and ended.

+1 to Reverse.

My Map Folio is still in shrinkwrap--never used it.

Instead I extracted the hex maps from the AP, printed them, glued them to sturdy cardboard and built the map one-hex-at-a-time while my group explored it (also added the different icons which were used for the different encounter areas)--good times.

Oleg's outpost is available as a separate map by Paizo, AFAIR.

Ruyan.

Thanks again for the insight, I really appreciate it. I'll admit I was more interested in the folio if I could get a print version but they are no longer printing it. The price seemed a little steep for a pdf (to my cheap sensabilities -- not saying its a rip off) but wanted to make sure.

I'll try extracting the maps and using google images for the most part.

Thanks!

Not sure if this link will work

But I found that map with google. I added the red location markers as my groups heard of locations.

However, I also use the maps from the pdf - if you select / copy the image - you can paste it into another application (word, paint etc) without any labels.

If you'd like an electronic copy that is Community Use compliant, I have here.

The page itself shows a Kingmaker map mid to late game, but there is a link to a baseline map.

It also includes a .FCW file if you use Campaign Cartographer.
