Bear-barian? or How to Get a Bear Pet

Pathfinder Society

For reasons that I'm sure many of you will already know, I'm trying to figure out how to get a bear companion for an Unchained Barbarian. It's not a must-have, but it would be cool to have as a pet.

Animal Ally doesn't seem to work, unless there's a later feat that allows bears?

I'm not sure Mad Dog is allowed for Unchained Barbarians, and I don't really want to trade Rage levels for it.

I could multiclass with Hunter I suppose…

Anything else?

I would think that Mad dog works for unchained as it just delays your rage and isn't altering the rage.

But other than that you'll need to dip and boon companion and you'll be capped at lv5 bear.

"Rage" the Class Feature is altered by the Mad Dog archetype. A delay is still an alteration of the class feature.

Looks like it wouldn't be worth the trouble, that's fine. I can always GM it and assign the Chronicle to a hunter blob later.

And I can kind of see the point, raging and having a pet is a bit much.

I was under the impression that the unchained barbarian was able to take any normal barbarian archetypes? I don't play PFS and don't have a link to this information, but I could have sworn that was a stated feature when Unchained rolled out.

There seems to be a bit of confusion about altering the rage feature.

The unchained barbarian qualifies for any archetype that does not modify how the rage class feature operates (such as the urban barbarian archetype), and she is limited to any barbarian rage power that appears in Chapter 1 (including the rage powers on page 13)

So no, a delay does not change how rage operates - it still operates the same way and is not changed (as it is in the urban barbarian).

I just realized that this is the same discussion we're having over in the other thread.

You couldn't combine another archetype that altered Rage with Mad Dog, so no, you can't create an Unchained Mad Dog Barbarian*.

Well, you could, but that's a build that I wouldn't suggest risking due to table variation.

Except Unchained is not an Archetype, and rules for combining archetypes are very black and white and use different wording.

Leadership?

Not PFS legit.

Also no Large Bears (well almost impossible except for the BR Cav or something) - because the PFS leadership hates bears and loves cats and dinosaurs. :p

Lunar Oracle 1, Primal Companion Mystery, Bear
Unchained Barbarian 4
Boon Companion Feat
Rage Prophet Prestige class.

There you go. You now have a bear animal companion, on a barbarian, and your effective druid level is your character level.

if they wanted it to be like an archetype and if it touched rage then they wouldn't have said anything about changing how the rage operates. They'd have just said rage. Also the urban example I feel supports it since it is changing how the rage works.

Leadership most likely wont chime in until sometime Monday if they are going to at all.

That would work, if you have two oracle levels, since Rage Prophet requires BAB +5.
