Shield boss in PFS?

GM Discussion

A player wants to have a shield boss added to his shield. How do we roll the craft checks - he is planning to hire someone to do it. Do we just wave the craft check or what?

Thanks!

You are in the Pathfinder Society section of the boards. Really, there is no crafting in PFS, so that question doesn't come up.

However the Spiked Shield might be what you are after, and adding shield spikes is a cost of 10 gold pieces. Found in the armor tables in the Core Rulebook.

Flagged for Rules Questions forum.

You mean the Shield Boss from Melee Tactics Toolbox?

As understand it, they are not PFS legal, so the how-to doesn't matter.

Aha! So if you are talking about this shield boss, which as Murdock said is on Archives of Nethys, the site has it as legal, which is a good sign. You should also check the Additional Resources to see if it is legal.

If it is legal, then just buy it.

Huh? Archives of Nethys says it is *not* legal.

It is probably not legal *because* it has a craft check to install, and there is no crafting in PFS.

Im pretty sure the craft skill is not itself restricted as much as actually crafting things not given exceptions.
That said due to the restrictions on crafting, most people dont have it unless it is a requirement for class, feat, etc or they are using it for the extra gold roll at the end of scenario.
The boss is not listed on the restrictions and is on the pages allowed.
You do as far as I know need to pass the check to put it on the shield though. Not a hard check, maybe even another party member can do it.

I was looking at this page (scroll way down) when I said the site declared it legal. Interesting that they don't match.

Pathfinder Player Companion: Melee Tactics Toolbox

Archetypes: all archetypes on pages pages 9–15 are legal for play; Equipment: all equipment and magic items on pages 18–29 are legal for play, except arms of the marilith, exemplar weapon salve, Leng flail, and the growing weapon property; Feats: all feats on pages 7–15 are legal for play, except Cudgeler Style, Cudgeler Sweep, Cudgeler Takedown, Just out of Reach, and Redirect Attack; the Kraken Throttle and Kraken Wrack feats are not style feats Masterpiece: the bardic masterpiece is legal for play; Spells: all spells on pages 30–31 are legal for play, except blade tutor's spirit.

Since Shield Boss is on page 21 and not on the banned items list I'd say just pay for the Boss you want. The Glyph of the Open Road is probably just missing from the Shield Boss description page at the archives.

Edit: As far as the craft check to attach the Boss to the shield that's the player's responsibility. It's just a skill check no different then making a disable device check, they just used Craft here. If the player fails the Craft check he damages his shield. I'd suggest he have a friend with mend memorized or have a wand of it himself.

For Pathfinder Society play, if you buy a shield boss between adventures, you don't have to roll the Craft check—assume that you find someone to install it for you. You only need to worry about the Craft check if you purchase and install a shield boss during an adventure.

Thanks Linda! That's the judgement call I made at the table -- the PFS could provide a crafter with at least +5 and some lowly caster to cast mend upon failures until success.

Again, thanks!

Rock on!! Thanks Linda!! Im loving the psychopomp, they are an awesome little creature.

Why is this in GM Discussion? Did someone flag this to be moved assume "shield boss" was someone in the Finale Battle that wields a shield?

It was flagged in the second post and moved from general to GM I don't know why it was flagged or moved here though

Dunno either but I'd guess it's because the GM ends up signing off on the chronicle?
