Guide to Absalom - Pleasure Salon of Calistria

Pathfinder Society

Dark Archive 2/5

I noticed in the Additional resources, one of the resources not listed for PFS is the Guide to Absalom... Can it be the very guide to the main city of the world is not legal for Society play?

I came upon this trying to find rules for access to the Wasp Honey that is produced only in the Pleasure Salon of Calistria in the city of Absalom.

This of course would be for my Calistrian Cleric.

Thank You for any advice regarding legality or Guide to Absalom or how I can gain access to Wasp Honey for role play purposes. Best to just buy a jar of honey and call it wasp honey? Or would i need official documentation for such an item.

Masterwork Tool?

10 applications for +2 Escape Artist?

I don't actually know what it does.

There are no stats for it, only role play affect. I am just not sure because wasps dont usually pollinate. And in the description of the Pleasure Salon of Calistria it also states that they are a unique and special kind of wasp that can create this type of Honey.

Hence why i am curious if i need special access to purchase it? or if I can just claim it is and it costs the same as normal honey, which i highly doubt.

I assume if it had stats it would be some type of poison or love potion. However for me, it is irrelevant, as i just want the Honey for Role Play.

Masterwork Tool?

Giant Wasps prefer to target you in combat, but only to attempt Steal maneuvers?

Just spend some money on rations and say it's for honey.

If there are no stats for it, there isn't really anything to make legal, is there?

Honestly, without either a link to the text or quoting it here, most of us probably can't give you useful answers.

There don't seem to be any mechanical options in the book.

There aren't. It's really a description of Absalom; its history, districts, and notable locations and people. To answer the original question, just buy a jar of honey and call it "wasp honey". The general rule of thumb is that if there aren't any mechanical benefits you can spend a reasonable amount and buy the item. ("My belt is ostrich-skin, not calf-skin.")

Guide to Absalom has some things that could prove problematic if you tried to use it as a rule book. Did you know that (according to GtA) casting invisibility and related spells is illegal in Absalom, even for defensive purposes? Better hope there are no witnesses around if a fight breaks out and you use one of those. It's a very interesting source book for lore, but isn't a rulebook.

IIRC, it also has a few districts that have been changed or removed in more current guides.

I thought GMs can use materials from Campaign Setting books for flavor? I wouldn't actually arrest PCs because that's a mechanical thing, but I might let them know about the law in advance if I knew a player was invisibility-prone, or have someone give them a warning or something. It's this sort of detail that makes this such a rich campaign setting.

It's no different than goblins being full citizens in Irrisen or holy symbols being outlawed in Rahadoum. PFS still happens in Golarion.

Pathfinder Chronicles: Guide to Absalom

Page: 15 under "Pleasure Salon of Calistria"
4th paragraph

"The Salon also offers two unusual services in addition to the normal labors available in a temple of Calistria. First, the salon has the greatest wasp hive in Absalom, and this rare breed of wasp is the only kind known to produce a variety of sweet, clear honey. The honey is highly prized by makers of metheglin (a mead-like alcoholic drink) throughout the Ascendant Court and the Ivy and Petal districts, and is sold monthly in an auction."

I am not looking for stats, but some reasonable way to access it for purely roleplay purposes.

Due to its rare nature "and is sold monthly in an auction" i would believe it to be difficult to get or even just buy honey and call it wasp honey.

Its ok either way, just trying to add some flavor to my character.

I'm being serious when I keep mentioning "Masterwork Tool".

Drop 50 gold, and decide something to use it for.

It's obviously not normal honey.

"Purely for roleplay" is hard to pull off. Who just carries around a jar of honey?

+2 Diplomacy when dealing with Calistrians.
+2 Profession (merchant) when bartering.
Counts as a "Trade Good".

Whatever "roleplay" you're intending to use it for, add something mechanical, drop some gold, and go to town.

Plus, if "Wasp Honey" ever gets printed, with stats, you can say yours was from the previous hive, and it differs somewhat.

Just buy honey. Pay more for it if you want.

I would treat it as honey for the purposes of pricing the item (1 gp/lb., as noted on page 93 of Ultimate Equipment). If you'd like to spend more than that per pound and record the item as "expensive honey" or the like, I have no objections. The first session I GMed for Pathfinder Society involved the PCs having to shop for fancy clothing. My NPC clothier salesman convinced one of the PCs to drop 150 gp on a "masterwork hat" that she kept for the rest of her career. I think it might have come into play once after that (the character's now level 17), but she always held onto that hat as a point of pride.

If your character wants to have a jar of rare honey, I see little issue. If it one day comes up that having a jar of delicious honey would be useful (I can think of one scenario, actually), I suspect your GM will be more amused by your character having it in his inventory than concerned that you purchased honey for ten times the normal price.

Adventurers would be surprised at the number of encounters that can be resolved peacefully by an offering of the proper nutritious snack if they would just give it a chance...
