Interesting Downtime Options

Hell's Rebels

Dark Archive

So, one of the things I found interesting about the game is that there is a lot of downtime going on concurrently with the AP. I'm using the the Ultimate Campaign rules, and I really like the roots my players have put down in the city.

Anyone else had players do interesting things between bouts of rebellion?

We haven't started yet (next week!) but I have enforced some character creation rules that I think will help us in this regard.

* Day jobs. All had to put one rank into a Profession (something). (We run with Background Skills from Unchained so no grumbles from my players.) I hope to get a lot of downtime activities (and scenario fuel) out from this. Our sorc is a baker (Laria is a long-time competitor!), the cleric a painter, slayer plays the flute in a bar band when not tending his orange stand, and the urban ranger works as a house guard in the Greens (after getting fired from the Dottari).

* No orphans allowed. Personally I hate the cliché (and sometime cop-out) of the "tragic and sombre orphan brought up in the streets", but aside from my personal aversion it often leaves fewer role playing hooks. So I have requested lists with names and descriptions of parents, siblings, co-workers, friends, childhood enemies, partners, children etc. I will sprinkle the downtime with events concerning these NPCs.

* Locals. All PCs have to be from Kintargo, or have to have lived there for at least a year. All have to have a described home. One is living in the Iudeimus tenement :) This will also help fill the downtime with substance, I hope.

I will use the downtime more for breathing life and creating connections to the city and thus won't use the UC rules as written - I think the rebellion rules will be quite enough micro-management for my group.

See, I encouraged my characters to set down roots. Some did more then others. I dunno if I would go with your "All have to have lived in the city" but I only had one player who was an out of towner, and he had a pretty good backstory (He was a Cleric of Milani who had come to find out what happened to the cult)
