Out of Tier

I've played Pathfinder Society games off and on for a while, but am trying to start (and GM) a new local group. I have a question I don't quite see a good explanation for. The question is when to apply the "out of sub-tier" gold.

In the new Guild guide (v 8.0), on page 11, it tells me when scenarios started using this.

On page 16 it tells me that this rule applies to GM credit.

But the guide doesn't really give me a plain English explanation.

Here are a couple of assumptions, let me know if these are cases to apply the "out of sub-tier" gold.

A) Table of 6 players with an average PC level of 2. Plays sub-tier 1-2. Is the third level PC at the table "out of sub-tier"? Would he be out of sub-tier playing up in a sub-tier 4-5 game?

B) A table of 6 players with an average PC level of 3 - usually forced up to play 4-5. Are the 1st to 3rd level PCs now playing out of sub-tier?

C) If I GM a game that goes sub-tier 1-2 and then want to apply GM credit to my third level PC, am I out of sub-tier?

I appreciate the help.

Using a 1-5 scenario as an example. First you calculate the groups APL.

If the group's APL puts them in the 1-2 subtier. Any characters level 3-5 will get out of tier rewards.

If the group's APL puts them in the 4-5 subtier. Any characters level 1-3 will get out of tier rewards.

Rewards for GM credit depends on level of character getting it. A level 1 or 2 character will get subtier 1-2 rewards. A level 3 character will get out of subtier, and a level 4 or 5 character will get subtier 4-5 rewards.

A) Yes and Yes.
B) Yes.
C) Yes.

Easy rule: Whenever a character is receiving a chronicle sheet, if their level is not in the sub-tier that was played, they receive out-of-sub-tier gold. GM chronicles are out-of-sub-tier if the character is between tiers (what was played doesn't matter).

Small note: this applies regardless of season. If there isn't an "out of subtier" on the sheet, you average the subtier played with the sub-tier they would have been in (or the other closest subtier for characters in-between subtiers). This even applies to Tier 1-2 scenarios which have separate sub-tiers for L.1 and L.2 (The Confirmation & Wounded Wisp). A L.3 in a 1-5 *always* gets out-of-sub-tier gold.

a. The 3rd lever character is out of tier for a tier 1-2 game, granting him out of tier gold.

b. yes, the tier is 4-5. every character not level 4 or 5 gets out of tier gold. but make sure to wish them luck. Last time I ran a game like this, the first combat killed 2 and forced the others to withdrawal. Granted this specific scenario, the first fight was the only fight, and was meant to be challenging.

c. for this one. i believe it is you assign the gold to what ever level you character is. so if the level you are assigning it to is 1 or 2 it gets the gold from tier 1-2. 3 would get you out of tier gold. and 4-5 gold if your character is level 4 or 5.

a little slow on the draw.. Yeah what they said.^^^

If you are the GM and you are applying the chronicle to a character that is between tiers, then you get out of tier gold and whichever items that the players received. Again, this only applies to GM credit characters who are between tiers.

Thanks for the quick answers! This definitely helped clear it up.

OK. Here's another "out of tier" question.

The Confirmation (#5-09) is a Tier 1-2 scenario.

It has two subtiers: Level 1 and Level 2.

One 2nd level character sits down with a table of 1st level characters. Average character level puts them solidly in subtier 1.

It seems the 2nd level player is "out of tier" and would get a gold amount that splits the difference between tier 1 and tier 2.

Did I get that right?

Thanks.
