PE of psychic monsters?

Advice

Is there a formula for determining how much psychic energy a monster with the Psychic Magic universal monster rule should have? The numbers seem all over the place in existing creatures.

The Exchange

This is a really good question, as I've been wondering the same thing.

Adding in to this. Looking at the esoteric dragon entry it declares psychic energy for it to be 1/2 HD + Int or Cha mod (whichever is highest) then adding +2 for each age category.

Brain moles on the other hand have a -4 Int mod and a 0 Cha mod and 2 HD, but get 12 PE.

It seems to be whatever thematically fits with the creature but I was also curious if there is a formula somewhere.

I don't think there is or should be any more than there's a formula determining how many SLAs a monster gets or how often a particular one gets used per day.

I agree with Plausible Pseudonym. As a baseline when designing your own psychic critters, consider making sure they'd at least have enough to use each of their abilities once (unless your design idea for the monster includes one or more more powerful abilities that are stronger than a 1/day SLA usually is and use up a lot of its effort).

Think of them essentially as more flexible SLA users, sort of like the sorcerer (who can pick how many of which spell to cast) to a normal SLA monster's wizard (who gets a set number of SLAs a set number of times).
