The Old Man

Advice

Silver Crusade

Hi guys,
I just discovered this creature: The Old Man , and I love it! I'm wandering if there is a good way to transpose it as a pg. I'm mainly looking for race / classes / feats...

This is how it appears, and this is the concept that I would like to achieve:

- Old Man traveling on top of his giant turtle. It would be perfect if it was small and had a turtle familiar with the Mauler archetype, but small races make bad monk-ish pgs, so I suppose I should backup on a medium race (Dwarf?) with a turtle animal companion (which becomes a suitable mount only at 7th) or on a medium race with the above mentioned familiar, with also the Undersized Mount feat. Familiars are better because they don't need a full class investment to be useful: a 3 level dip in a class that gives one is enough to unlock the Mauler Battle Form.

- No need to be dex-focused as the original creature. See next.

- The Old Man usually acts as a...old man. He's slow and travels only on top of his turtle (bad news for the party if the turtle is a familiar :P); except when in combat. In such case he uses 2 styles of combat: highly defensive when still, light-speed when moving. This means Stalwart & Crane Style when he's at range of his enemy, and Dimensional-chain feats when he needs to move. This is of course highly feat intensive, so all this is subject to the amount of resources available.

- Any class that can achieve this concept is accepted. Obviously the first candidate is Unchained Monk, but I'm open to explore other options. For example, the Monk doesn't get any Familiar/Animal Companion, and there are other ways to get Dimensional Door (or similar features) like Wizard Teleportation Subschool (which gives also a familiar) or the Cleric Travel Domain (which is Wis-oriented), available also to Inquisitors, both of whom can have animal companions (Clerics via the Animal Domain, Inquisitor via Sacred Huntsman archetype).

Turtle Hermit from Dragon Ball!

Only thing missing is Kamehameha.

Liberty's Edge

Blood Conduit and Urban Bloodrager are compatible, I believe, and that would also enable you to pick up a familiar. Admittedly, the wisdom aspect is somewhat nonsensical to include, but the Urban Rage can be pretty easy to fluff as some kind of Chakra being unlocked, as it lacks any of the usual rage mechanics. It doesn't really help the feat tax any, though - its bonus feat at level is either a redundant IUS or Improved Maneuver.

As a longer term pick, Destined Bloodline has Die Hard as a Bloodline Feat. They do *eventually* get Dimension Door, but it takes so long.

Eldritch Guardian fighter is a pretty fun dip, but incompatible with Unarmed Fighter. Boo.

Inquisitor sounds pretty suitable, aside from the feat starvation. Bane is surprisingly fitting for a Zen combatant, who would probably find and exploit an opponent's weakness with ease.

I believe Half Orcs can pick up Shaman's Apprentice Racial Trait, which gives Endurance for free. That, at least, helps the build quite comfortable, and this is an awesome idea that I would love to see.

Have you read the last paragraph? The Five Animals

"Sometimes the Old Man appears or travels with one of five animals. They do not have unique names, and he addresses them merely as Turtle, Monkey, Ox, Rooster, and Pig. They obey him as any well-trained animal might obey its owner, though they can be temperamental and sometimes refuse to follow commands. They do not appear to be more intelligent than common animals or have any unusual powers (nothing that couldn't be taught with conventional training using the Handle Animal skill), though they immediately vanish if attacked. The animals may actually be detailed, lifelike projections of animals from the Old Man's mind or perhaps something like a summoner's eidolon, used to present himself as a common man or provide lessons on patience and kindness, but he treats them as if they were individual living creatures he has known for a long time. There may be a secret significance to which animal he brings with him for a particular task (other than the obvious, such as using Ox to pull a plough, which of course Rooster cannot do), but his followers have been unable to spot a pattern in these choices."

So maybe Summoner would be suitable or Beastmaster Ranger for more Animal Companions.
