So which NPCs survived your campaign?

Rise of the Runelords

Dark Archive

While PC deaths and after action reports of the campaigns are fun to read, I'm personally really interested in hearing about which NPCs managed to survive conflict with players :D

In Burnt Offerings, this is my party's tally so far:

Koruvus: Dead.

Erylium: Survived initial boss fight with party, survived Thistletop rematch and in third rematch in Turandarok Academy's basement she was trapped by party, but party was unable to kill her so I got frustrated and allowed them to capture her in magic jar belonging to Academy's headmaster. So yeah, party has a jar with angry quasit in it.

Gogmurt: Pinned down and interrogated. Survived along with 9 other Thistletop goblins. Was put under Tup's leadership(or rather party was planning to make him puppet leader, but Tup took position).

Terrible Tup: Recruited for Thistletop and managed to not burn party members. So yeah, he survived and become Thistletop goblins' chief. Which didn't last long since Malfeshnekor was put down.

Tsuto Kaijitsu: Color spray'd, hypnotized for information, thrown to prison, got taken to Hells in Magnimar.

Orik Vancaskerkin: Almost took down party's fighter, got pinned down, was recruited to party for time of Thistletop and left for Magnimar to find jobs not involving monster cults.

Lyrie Akanjo: Got thrown into prison and taken to Hells in Magnimar.

Bruthazmus: Decapitated.

Stickfoot & Ripnugget: Stickfoot died from Terrible Tup's pyromania. RIpnugget decapitated.

Nualia: "Disarmed"(hah) and thrown to prison and then taken to Hells in Magnimar.

Malfeshnekor: Poor guy had too small room to put up good fight. Aka dead.

Orik lived and became a recurring NPC (I have a thread about his misadventures in this forum).

Malfeshnekor nearly killed the party fighter in the first round and the party fled, never to return.

Teraktinus got Feebleminded and is currently wandering near-mindlessly in the Sandpoint hinterlands.

Gholorofaex was completely avoided by the party.

Every other major enemy was killed (though it took 3 fights with Erylium [the final being alongside The Scribbler] and 3 with Xanesha [alongside Most High Ceoptra] to finish the job.)

My party only just finished book 2, so here are the survivors so far...

Gogmurt: Exhausted all his offense (including the goblin dogs and losing his AC)against the party without taking much damage. So he negotiated to let the party pass IF they took out the humans in Thistletop and not the goblins. He waited a day, and scouted Thistletop while the party was in there. Discovering they'd killed all the gobs therin, he lead the refugees on the mainland down to the Licktoad tribe and lives there still. Damn Longshanks.

Habe: The party was convinced enough of his innocence to spare him and his orderlies. They never saw that he was the one who alerted the necromancer to come up and attack. After intimidating Habe, the party alchemist took over as the sanitorium's patron and was going to take the Leadership feat to make Habe and the orderlies cohort/underlings until he died. Habe doesn't yet know his new patron will not be returning.

Xanesha: Only just faced and defeated the party, but was forced to flee. She returned to the Shadowclock to retrieve her loot, and ship town. She will obsess over the party and return at the appropriate time.

Most of Sandpoint is still alive. ;) As is Magnimar. ;)

The two orderlies in Hab's are around.

Tsuto and Lyrie fled a second encounter with the PCs, while Orik ended up joining the Black Arrows (and they survived, including the traitor who got sent off for trial). Oh, and Barl lived.

Up until the Runeforge, everyone else that they faced died. The white dragon they negotiated with (they want the dragon to help them at Xin Shalast) and they negotiated with the succubus and her crew.

My group is 2/7 of the way through Runeforge. Survivors have been few. The players have played with me for a very long time and they are suspicious of prisoners/survivors.

Spoiler:

Example: after a long chase through the tunnel, the pc's caught up with Tsuto - rather the wizard and bard did, the fighter and cleric trailing. It was one of the more desperate fights of the campaign - given 2 of the 3 participants ended up below 0 hp. The pc's asked what would happen if they took him back to the Sheriff. I told them he would most likely be sent to Magnimar for trial given his noble blood, etc. They decided to take him back but let him stabilize on his own. If he died, he died. He didn't make it. This seemed legitimate to me given the Mansonesque scene Tsuto had left behind in the Glassworks.

When I first looked at the thread, I didn't think there had been many at all but on further review there have been some:

Gogmurt: through a strange sequence of events, the goblin druid was left on the mainland when the pc's crossed to the island. They eventually chopped the bridge down to keep the druid from messing with them. When it became clear the Thistletop goblins were no more, Gogmurt left to take up with the Mosswood goblins.

Orik: he surrendered to the pc's (when at 1 hp) in the middle of a large fight. He started fighting along with the pc's a few rounds later when the cleric included him in some healing. After everything else in Thistletop was dead, the pc's had Orik (armorless) climb down, swim over, climb up, etc. to fix the rope bridge - braving the bunyip. They set him free with a dagger, some food and some clothes and told him that if they saw him in the area again, they'd see to it he paid for his crimes.

Everyone at Habe's: the cleric made a heal check, recognized that Grayst had ghoul fever and hit him with a remove disease. Grayst remained befuddled with ability damage but he didn't pose a threat nor attack. The pc's found Habe's behavior suspicious and took Grayst back to town with them along with a warning. At the time, they suspected Habe was part of the problem. They never encountered the necromancer, who no longer had any reason to tangle with the Heroes of Sandpoint.

Black Magga: pretty much per AP, she retreated after a few rounds. The pc's did not immediately pursue. Later on their way to the dam, I had them spot what looked like signs of a huge creature leaving the river and making its way into the forest.

Lucretia: she fled Fort Yannick when all the ogres were slain And fled again when Barl and all the residents in the Clanhold were dead. I placed her at the Storval stairs, seeking revenge on the pc's but they bypassed the stairs with Windwalk. Right now, I thinking of having her be encountered in the Spires, devolved/promoted to a Hungerer - Karzoug does not seem the type to have any tolerance for failure.

Titus Scarnetti and Jubrayl: the mill-burning plot came to light when the pc's recovered the loot from the Scagnetti estate after the giant attack. The pc's helped chased down the Sczarni leader who fled an initial arrest attempt. Titus had his lands and titles forfeit and he and Jubrayl were sentenced to the Hells. It's a bad idea to get arrested on the same day the town almost burns to the ground from a dragon and giant attack.

Conna: the pc's allied with her and she along with Grumelda the cook were the only survivors from Under Jorgenfist. Only one harpy survived from the fortress above and she fled when the Black Monk went down. Oh wait, the dwarven smiths were freed and brought back to Sandpoint.

That's about it. After about the middle of Book 2, there aren't very many likely opponents that merit saving or redeeming. Ghouls, serial killers, lamia's, ogrekin, ogres, giants, hags, necromancers, and worse. None leave Golarion any worse by dying. I expect few survivors in Runeforge - so far in Greed and Wrath there have been none (do goldfish count?) And ditto for Book 6 - though if the pc's figure out the Storm and Cloud giants are magically dominated...

Oh yeah. Conna lived also, as did some of the dwarves.

And the trolls on top of the dam lived.

And I think Gortmurt lived...

As did the frost giant emissaries (I also included a White Witch from Irrisen and she lived - nice bluff by the Irrisen Sorceress).

And best of all? They killed undead Aldern... but left him in the room with the mold. The mold left the wall, crawled onto his body, and turned it into a Mold That Walks (ie, Worm that Walks). They will encounter it again, trust me. :D

Dark Archive

Oh, so like Vorel possessed Aldern's undead body? :D Huh

They haven't gotten very far in Skinsaw Murders yet. So far they left everyone at Habe's sanatorium alive(they cured Sevilla from ghoul fever and then left without learning about Caizarlu or Habe's experiments. They did rescue those two farmers hanging as scarecrows though. I wonder if they are able to take out Xanesha or interrogate Skinsaw Cult's leader just as they have interrogated almost every other named baddy...

Just about finished book 5, lots of leftovers...

Spoiler:

Orik Vancaskerkin - lived to be a recurring... bumbling fool I guess would be the best way to put it.

Malfesshnekor - laid on some hurt, but got locked back up in his room as the group fled.

Esme - (from a side mission, Godsmouth Heresy), was rescued from a crypt beneath Sandpoint, only to be locked in a room in the White Deer, and never seen from again as the character that put her there died without telling anyone.

Rogors Craesby - plot hook was ignored.

Ironbriar - released on condition that he would head north, and never come back to Magnimar.

Casuval - Black Dragon (from a side mission, Seven swords of sin), made a deal with the group to let them pass in exchange for his freedom, then began terrorizing Magnimar and another deal was made where he left the city alone.

The Scarecrow - Fled into the bay during combat

Kaven Windstrike - Left in jail at Fort Rannick

Grazuul - Avoided through Diplomacy

Black Magga - The party evacuated, and she got bored and left with one of their corpses.

Longtooth - Hid in his cave after Sandpoint, made a deal with party because of grudge he held against his former master.

Conna - Helped the party inside Jorgenfist

Black Monk, Galenmir, Grumelda, Lokansir, Seleval, Zaelsar, - not encountered due to intelligence gained from above two.

Jordimandus - Currently alive, tough there has been talk of going back to kill him. Made a deal with party for information.

Delvahine - Managed to fend off the party long enough to reach a compromise, and has become an "ally" of the group.

Zuvuzeg - Agreed to undo his binding, after which he disappeared.

Ah. Forgot a few (not counting NPCs that are presented as friendly or at least non-threatening, since that would be a long list)

Habe: Got chucked in an empty cage at the Santorium with the key broken off in the lock, then reported to Sheriff Hemlock.

Black Monk: Completely avoided. One flying, invisible PC inspected his chamber, went "That looks like some kind of mummy. No thanks" and the party left him alone.

Delvahine: Traded one of her toys in exchange for being freed from Runeforge.

Jordimandus: Party completely avoided the Sloth wing.

Most blessed Sarenrae, this is Ryll, your faithful Paladin who only recently defeated Runelord Karzoug, and I have a confession to make.

I cannot shake the feeling of disappoint I may have caused you while my friends and I were stuck in the Runeforge with all of the various minions the Runelords had left behind. After numerous difficult battles, we wandered down into the Sloth wing and encountered the disgusting, corpulent wizard, Jorimandus, who presumably had some hellish icor pumping from his heart. I knew this man was trouble and beyond redemption, but I decided to let him live his putrid life out, trapped in Runeforge, Rule of Refuse.

If you can recall, we had only just recently learned how big a threat Runelord Karzoug was to Golarion, and my main goal became escaping Runeforge and hunting Karzoug. So, when Jorimandus offered us a deal to leave him alone to rule the rivers of dung in exchange for information on defeating the denizens of the other wings, and on escaping Runeforge, I must confess that I agreed and kept my word.

My goddess, if feel as though the good fight has been won, but if it be your will, give me a sign and I will return to send the oozelord Jorimandus to the judgment seat of Pharasma.

Erylium - Escaped the Catacombs and joined up with Naulia in Thistletop, then survived that fight and escaped to parts unknown.

Malfesnekor - Heroes closed the door and left a big "do not open" sign.

Arkrhyst - Fledafter battling the heroes at the Sihedron Circle.

Delvahine - Escaped the heroes and Runeforge to set up shope somewhere else.

Jordimadus - Cut a deal with the heroes that left him the only surviving Warden of Runeforge.

It's worth noting that my players completely skipped the following sections: Skull Dam, Shimmerglens, The Spared/Hidden Beast, Gyukak at the Giant Encampment, and Heptaric Locus (although the did fight Gamigan).

Most of the NPCs in Sandpoint got wiped out when

Spoiler:

the giant army from Xin-Shalast invaded Varisia. My party took way too much downtime late in the game to craft (lots of Greed sin points), and Karzoug decided to start sending in scouting parties. When the party delayed again after creating the domineering weapons, Karzoug decided it was time to get serious, and used his apprentice to set up a teleport circle at the Stroval Stairs. Now there are two invading armies running around Varisia. One is besieging Kaer Maga, and the other just wiped Sandpoint off the map (after destroying all settlements in-between, and has their eyes set on Magnimar.

Good times

It's day 302 of the campaign. At day 365, it all ends, and Mhar Masif escapes.

Orik, Conna, and Ameiko are the big 3 that survived.

Most of Sandpoint was destroyed. Shalelu died (captured and taken to Jorgenfist.) all of the big baddies have been killed by my group. Even those that attempt to surrender.

We're at the Fortress of Stone Giants, the players have just started exploring Jorgenfist.

Shalelu Andosana: Revealed as the mother of the half-elf ranger of the group, she accompanied the party until the end of Hook Mountain Massacre when she made peace with the leader of the Black Arrows. Returned to Sandpoint to reinforce its security in the wake of the giant attacks. (Left town years later due to the events of the Jade Regent AP)

Small digression:
In my game Shalelu was the mentor (also secret mother) of Cathryn, the group's female half-elf ranger. She and Bruthazmus were nemesis, having had a long grudge punctuated by violent instances of arrow-shooting and trap-setting. When she noticed the bugbear scouting nearer Sandpoint she sent her apprentice to the town and moved to settle their grudge once and for all but got captured due to the help from Nualia.

She was later rescued by the PCs, who stealthily invaded Thistletop during a black mass held by Nualia and provided a lot of intelligence on the villains. Due to Orik's strangely timid but gentle treatment of her, she pointed out he might be useful.

Orik Vancaskerkin: Since the PCs had invaded Thistletop stealthily before and liberated some prisoners, the dungeon went on high alert. Most of the upper denizens guarded the throne room with the goblin chieftain and that resulted in a huge fight. The party was increasingly impressed with Orik's skill in battle (his nigh-untouchable AC and respectable damage) and at the end of the battle all enemies were defeated but Orik was still standing behind his shield and the party offered him a chance to surrender. He told his story and promised to help the party with information but asked them to please not kill Lyrie (which is the only reason she's alive). Ended up fighting alongside the party when promised a full share of treasure and turned practically into a fourth PC (since we lost one player). Everyone keeps trying to turn him off Lyrie.

Lyrie: Survived Thistletop after Orik asked the party to spare her. Wrapped Orik around her finger, using his affection to convince him to pay for her arcane research and lavish lifestyle in Magnimar. She is probably due to receive some bad news and be left with a couple thousand gold pieces in debt if the PCs convince Orik to leave her.

Erylium: Long battle, ended when an [/i]enlarged person[/i]ed paladin smote evil to gain huge bonuses to grapple. Grappled with no hope of escaping and surrounded by an enraged party, Erylium died squashed.

Nualia: Sadly, was killed. Would love to work on a redemption arc for her, but the party was way too pissed off about the lives lost as her burnt offerings.

Kaven Windstrike: Only survived the revelation of his treachery due to PC insistence and pragmatism (the Black Arrows were severely understaffed). The other Black Arrows all survived too despite me changing the last part of the adventure from a dungeon delve to an attack on the fort which the PCs had to lead, prepare for and survive.

Black Magga: Actually almost killed by the party! Who knew a greatsword evil-smithing power-attacking paladin dealt so much damage? She actually had to run for her life.

Tsuto: Got snuck up on while drunk, was incapacitated. In a holding cell in Sandpoint temporarily, then to Magnimar for trial

Korovus: Dead, eaten by Summon Monster I snakes

Erylium: Dead, crushed by 2 Enlarge-Person'd melee characters with reach

Bruthazmus: Bled out on the ground after a fight with Shalelu, who drank a healing potion over his body as he died

Gogmurt: Went tree-form and tricked the party

Tangletooth: Is a fancy coat now

Bunyip: Crushed by a party-induced falling boulder

Ripnugget+Stickfoot: Dead, crushed by a falling tower after the party wizard Stone Call'd the complex 3 times in rapid succession, destroying most of Thistletop. Fight continued inside the ruins and rickety watchtower until both melee characters were Enlarge Person'd at the top, collapsing the rest of the structure on top of everyone involved.

Orik+Lyrie: Will probably be allies: wizard (again) bribed them with ~1000 gold to stay out of the fight with Ripnugget (with a down payment.) We'll see on Thursday how that plays out.

Nualia+Malefshnekor: Maybe betrayed by Orik+Lyrie? Thursday will tell.

Been a while, so this might be a bit fuzzy...

Tsuto: Captured, put on trial, sentenced to the Hells. Released by his REAL father Ironbriar and recruited to his cult, where the party finally ended him in the sawmill.

Ironbriar: captured and released on the promise he head south and disappear forever.

Ripnugget: Captured and brought to trial in Magnimar. Executed for his crimes.

Lyrie: Captured and tried, sentenced to the Hells.

Orik: Captured and tried, sentenced to the Black Arrows, which became my hook (pardon the pun) for book 3 when the party was assigned to escort him to Fort Rannik. Became a pretty loyal member of that organization and is helping to rebuild that group.

Shelelu: Stayed with her father at Fort Rannik to help rebuild the Black Arrows for a while.

Kaven: Fled when his treachery was discovered, didn't make it past the shocker lizards.

Vale: Killed by big daddy Graul, but reincarnated by the party (tweeners couldn't do Raise Dead yet). Came back as an orc, and convinced this allowed him the chance to become an excellent infiltrator and scout.

Jakardros: Reunited with Shelelu and rebuilding the Black Arrows.

Hook Mountain Hags: I made them a mixed coven, two fled when one was killed and broke the coven's circle.

Conna: Helped convince the stone giant tribes to go home (holding Mokmurian's head helped persuade them) and is home leading her tribe.

Named Lamia under Jorgunfist: Escaped with their pet dragons. Party bypassed them completely, and they scooted when the SHTF.

Side note: Ameiko, Mayor Deverin, Scarnetti, Gavin Deverin (of Two Knight Brewery) and a handful of other NPCs of Sandpoint were captured in the giant raid and held under Jorgunfist. All were branded but all were rescued by the party and brought safely back to Sandpoint.

Jorimundus, Ordikon, Azaven: All left behind completely ignored in Runeforge.

Mogiv and the Skulks: Mostly slaughtered by Gamegin once he escaped their first encounter and made contact with Khalib. He did not survive the subsequent ambush of the party in the skulk tunnels.

Gyukak: Bypassed.

The party is now ready to hit the Pinnacle of Avarice, so there may be a lot more named NPCs to add to this list (or more likely, to the morgue).
