Hi!
I want to know if gnome caster level of Gnome Magic racial trait is equal to character level or class level.

I want to know this because i see some ambiguity in other race like dhampir and duergar for example.

Why dhampir's caster level for detect undead (Bestiary 2 pag.89)is equal to dhampir’s CLASS level?

Why duergar's caster level for enlarge person and invisibilty (Bestiary pag.117 )is equal to duergar’s CHARACTER level?

So for duergar's case why rules speak of CHARACTER level in RACIAL TRAITS description? Maybe it refers to duergar favored class? I can't understand why a race refers generically of class levels when a character may multiclass.

Thanks in advance.

So unless you see something different...

Gnomes add +1 to the DC of any saving throws against illusion spells that they cast. Gnomes with Charisma scores of 11 or higher also gain the following spell-like abilities: 1/day—dancing lights, ghost sound, prestidigitation, and speak with animals. The caster level for these effects is equal to the gnome's level. The DC for these spells is equal to 10 + the spell's level + the gnome's Charisma modifier.

Oh, wait, looking at the Dhampir I think I see what your problem is. Both the Duergar and Dhampir, while using different language, mean the same thing. Dhampir isn't a class and its abilities are not tied to a specific class. Therefore its "class level" is just the sum of its class levels, which is the same as its character level. Some writer decided to make things confusing, that's all. All three of those should function at character level.

Thank you Bob for the answer, i think too that is a different Language and a little bit confusing. I think the Language used in rules needs to follow a template. I notice certain things because i am a nitpicker a little :P

Anyway if you look at aasimar and tiefling (and Others for sure)we have the same "problem".

The SLAs are not derived from a specific character class, and therefore the answer can never be "class level" because "which class" is unanswered. That leaves "character level", which is equal to the sum of all class levels for all of the races in question.
