Based on my reading of this scenario you can't actually acquire boons, since every explore comes from the robber deck. Unless you get lucky with a Cache barrier, I suppose. Also, why would you close locations? You may close them when empty but it doesn't say you must. There doesn't seem to be any benefit to closing them.
So it looks to me like this is a slog through all the monsters, barriers and henchmen for n+2 Throne rooms, with likely a random roll for an upgrade at the end, since no one can encounter boons. The other cards in the location decks don't actually seem to matter.
I get that the boons represent valuables being destroyed - I'm just already mentally writing off this one as "no upgrade worth taking," since I probably won't get any boons. Am I getting something wrong in my understanding of the scenario?

We played it last night and had another question.
Should the on taking damage text that removes boons be for every instance of damage during an encounter?
In example, we faced two enchantresses, which dealt a damage before and after the combat. We played, based on the wording that the unlucky player (who go both of them, back to back) must remove 4 cards from their location and all unoccupied locations. Would that be correct?

This scenario was almost soloed by our Olenjack player. Free explores with poison use made it really easy, since you just keep exploring deck of banes. I was in same location with Maznar and animal ally to give that 1d4 buff on his checks too. =D
Also if you don't get any boons as loot you can roll boons from the game box at the end of scenario. Unfortunately we took cache of items from barrier and had pretty much just items as loot.
