It falls at at their feet unless you have an ability saying otherwise, like the feats Greater Disarm or Directed Disarm.

It gets dropped at their feet. Normally when you drop an item you get to choose if it's your square or an adjacent square. Disarm says "If your attack is successful, your target drops one item it is carrying of your choice." However, I don't think it would be fair to the disarmer to allow the opponent to drop the object behind him.
If you want to "knock it away" then another simple option is to disarm via an unarmed strike or something like a claw and then you can grab the weapon as part of disarming, and then as a free action you can drop in an adjacent square behind you.
