Determining the distance of a Flying Creature

Rules Questions

For purposes of a ranged attack against a flying creature, what is the proper way to determine how far away the creature is?

I've just been using which ever distance is farther for simplicity sake. So if a dragon is flying 60' up in the air and is 50' away from the pc I tell them the creature is 60' away. I know this isn't correct, so what the correct way?

A squared+ B squared = C squared (78')

but who can be bothered, I tend to go with largest distance + 1/2 smaller distance (85').

As long as you are consistent and it applies to both PCs and NPCs itshouldn't matter too much.
