Hello everybody! I'm planning to create an eventual Gunslinger 1/Inquisitor 10 for my next PFS character. I've never made a character who uses firearms before, because it takes a few levels and a few feats to get comfortable.
My solution is to start Level 1 as a Human Inquisitor (with a Longbow) so I can start immediately with Point-Blank and Precise Shot. I can also heal right away, including CLW Wands without UMD after my first chronicle. There are some downsides, like losing the extra starting HP and Dex to Damage. But Inquisitor gets my Favored Class Bonus at least.
Can you get the free starting gun from Gunsmithing even if you take Gunslinger after Level 1? I don't plan to dip in Gunslinger until Level 3 when I pick up Rapid Reload. I read the text and asked some of my friends, but it's kind of ambiguous. It says "At 1st level" but that could mean either 1st Character Level or 1st Class Level.

To be clear, the free gun is fromthe Gunsmith class feature of the Gunslinger class, not the Gunsmithing feat. You get this as a first level gunslinger, whenever it is that you take the class level.
You could only get the gun earlier if
1) you have the Gunsmithing feat (not from the gunslinger class)
2) you have the requisite fame (guns are never always available!)
In hou case, I might suggest level on as a gunslinger. I would also no stop at one level, as they really need five to come to their own. You definitely want to pick an archetype, typically musket master or pistolero. Mysterious stranger is interesting, especially if you are multi classing with a CHA based class, but you are doing an inquisitor.

I would second the 5+ levels Gunslinger... Dex to damage is needed.
My Pure Gunslinger started with Weapon Focus and Rapid Reload... but probably should have started with Point-Blank and Precise Shot... even attacking Touch, that -8 (in melee and Cover) is painful...
For a Gunslinger, actually, I would put Point Blank Shot and Precise Shot as vital at low level, but their need goes down, in general, as your level goes up. For some reason, higher CR monsters tend to rely more on Natural Armor, but be larger, with no Dex mod; as compared to lower CR creatures with good Dexes and potentially a bonus from being Small.
Goblins, as a CR 1/3 creature have an AC of 16, and a Touch AC of 13, so that -8 penalty really can hurt there, since you need a total to hit of an effective 21, there.
An Ancient Red Dragon, on the other hand, is CR 19, and has an AC of 38, even flatfooted, but a Touch AC of only 5, meaning that not having the feats makes it so you only need an effective 13 to hit their Touch. And a Gunslinger is a full BAB class, so as long as you don't roll a 1...
An Adult Red Dragon, since it is CR 14, might show up in sub-tier 10-11 as a possible opponent, and has an AC of 29, including flatfooted, but, again, a Touch AC of only 8. Even counting your levels of Inquisitor, and ignoring Bane, Judgement, enhancement, etc., you would have a BAB of +8, so, as long as you don't roll a 1....

I appreciate it everyone! Thanks so much. 5 Levels of Gunslinger is super tempting. It's just that I'm allergic to non-caster classes for some reason. I've made a lot of characters, but the worst times I've had were with a Ranger, Samurai, and Monk. Dips are great, and almost ubiquitous with my characters. Long stretches without spells make me sad though.
I'm basing my next character on Van Helsing, from the video games. All my characters' names are "Simon X". This character is my Bard Simon Dragonar, but I have a Mesmerist Simon Charming, a Druid Simon Victorious, a Magus Simon Christian etc. This will be Simon Van Helsing. :)

Son, Abadar didn't call me to his service until after I had mastered Vera, though masterin' that temperamental weapon has sometimes been an overstatement. But when I did... After reachin' that fifth level of what have you all y'awl are talkin' about, then I focused on the inquisitioning. Never looked bat, but gather the Lord of the First Vault didn't think he needed our services until that point.
Surpisingly, the guns of Alkestar work mighty well with that sort of magic. Never missed the magics I never learned.

I will definitely go 5 levels of Gunslinger if I get past Level 11 again. :) Thank you Ascalaphus!
Thanks Jayne Munny! Simon Van Helsing will probably go the opposite route. He's from Ustalav; far to the north of Alkenstar. As an Inquisitor (Sanctified Slayer) he's mostly trained in archery. In his Society career he will get the opportunity to try out firearms and take a level of Gunslinger to learn how to use one properly.
