A little more detail would be helpful. What deity/domains for the cleric? Is the ranger focused on archery, melee (Str-based Two-Weapon Fighting), or a switch-hitter? What arcane school for the wizard?
That said, for Core-only:
A cleric would be helpful, especially if the first player chooses a bard. Clerics are powerful and can fill many roles, including combat.
Likewise, a paladin could be a good fit if the ranger is focused on archery. One possibility for nonstandard paladin is paladin 5/bard 1/dragon disciple 4/paladin +3.
A rogue could also be useful; this is the Council of Thieves AP, after all. Depending on the arcane school/opposition schools of the wizard, a rogue 3/sorcerer (Elemental bloodline) 4/arcane trickster 6 could be a good fit.

Having played Council of Thieves, my vote would either be for rogue or cleric. Rogue would be a good choice because there are a fair number of points in which rogue-ish sorts of skills would be useful (keeping this vague to avoid spoiling you). If you're keen to multiclass, the rogue/sorcerer idea would be a an interesting one.
If your party is in need of a dedicated healer, cleric might be handy, though you do meet a cleric who you'll be working with pretty early on. He doesn't go along with you to do stuff, but he can help patch you back up afterwards. (Note: depending on how your GM runs the path, he may or may not be too much of a presence past the first book, if that's a consideration.) If your first player chooses a cleric, or even a bard with some healing spells, I'd go rogue.

For a Core CoT game, an Elven Eldritch Knight could be a lot of fun. Take Transmuter Wizard for some free extra physical stats, and wield an Elven Curved blade in two hands with Weapon Finesse while keeping enough strength for Power Attack. You can focus on fighting ability, while having plenty of skills through intelligence and plenty of useful supporting spellcasting through Wizard spells.
As an example:
Elf: 13STR, 15/17+DEX, 14\12CON, 15/17+INT, 10WIS, 8CHA
Fighter 1/ Transmuter Wizard 5/ Eldritch Knight 5
Wizard School: Transmuter - add enhancement bonus to STR or CON while using an item for DEX.
Wizard Arcane Bond: Elven Curved Blade - you can upgrade your weapon as if you had Craft Magic Arms and Armor.
1F. (+Elf: Elven Curved Blade) / Weapon Finesse / +F: Weapon Focus: Elven Curved Blade
2W.
3W. Arcane Strike
4W.
5W. Toughness
6W. +W: Spell Focus: Enchantment
7EK. Arcane Armor Training / +EK: Power Attack
8EK.
9EK. Weapon Specialization: Elven Curved Blade
10EK.
11EK. Greater Spell Focus: Enchantment / +EK: Improved Critical: Elven Curved Blade
On the melee side, two-handed Elven Curved Blade gets quite good with Power Attack, Arcane Strike and the Heroism spell. For spellcasting, focusing on Enchantment with things like Hideous Laughter and Confusion is a great way to help run control at the start of a battle.
