Hey guys!
So we have been working on and are, today, releasing the next book in our Alternate Paths series! This time we focus on divine characters. In case you haven’t read it- Endzeitgeist recently wrote an awesome review of the martial character version of this book and we think we are on point to have another smash hit on our hands!
Alternate Paths: Divine Characters has 6 new base classes (bishop, templar, lantern, la rosa, mariner, and leper), a slew of support feats, new divine spells, alternate rules for praying and “theologies” (think organizations as deities rather than just gods), a player race of good-aligned imps, new weapons for mariner, wheelchairs designed for battle (or “battle wagons”), and alignment based variants of the warpriest (law, chaos, good, evil, and one based more on favored weapons). We did a big old blog post about it on our site so, rather than making a monster post here about it, you can check it out in much greater detail there.
Also... it’s a pretty PDF. It’s got BEAUTIFUL art by industry newcomer Rui Ferreira (seriously- check him out) and it’s in our pretty two-column, easy to read, bookmarked, PDF format.
It’s currently up on DriveThruRPG and will be up sometime in the next few days on Paizo.com!

I have a quick question: the bishop's holy light ability states that you can make iterative attacks with it. Couple this with the bonus received vs evil aligned creatures and each blast can do as much as 12d6 points (plus Charisma bonus) of damage. This could be as much as 48d6+ points of damage at 20th lvl (haste plus normal iterative attacks). This seems especially potent to me. At 10th level it could be as much as 14d6+ points of damage per round. I am curious what your playtests showed regarding this amount of damage output?
Cheers

Sure thing.
Let's set up a 12th level ranged fighter vs a 12th level bishop and both parties have rapid shot. Due to additional feats the fighter has many shot and rapid shot, along with improved critical and critical focus. We are going to assume, for math's sake that, because there is no hard guidelines for how high touch AC vs CR should, that bishop hits on everything but a 1 (probably not always the case, but just for the sake of math). Targets are assumed to be CR 12 enemies.
The archer fighter will dish our about 122 points of damage per round. A bishop outputs around 143 according to our math. Now, remember, the bishop is a blaster so they should be on par with, or in excess of a fighter in ranged damage. They do not, however, out damage a similarly built paladin or ranger. The paladin is outputting about 150 per round (assuming evil creatures) and the ranger (assuming favored enemy) is at or around 172.
At 20th level the gap between fighter and bishop evens out. This is because of some late game feats that the fighter picks up and the fact that the bishop's damage against evil creatures doesn't scale (a choice we made to kind of cap out stuff and give them an early game DPR boost because they were kinda low).
At 20th a fighter outputs 307 per round and the bishop comes in at about 259 under optimum conditions.
At a range, depending on level, it is either the fighter's game or the bishop's game but it's really a matter of build style and at what point in the 1-20 level spread you are (and if your target is evil). I'd say it's probably simpler to get the bishop up that high without a super deep knowledge of the game's meta, but it's hardly the strongest out there. (also- fighter isn't the best measuring stick for DPR, it always comes up a little short on other classes).
But yes- the bishop is QUITE the blaster, particularly against evil creatures. That was the intent. If you look at their other class features they are not as offensive, though some of the commentaries and Instruments of Faith are. And, unless you are talking about the bound demon, your animal companion isn't QUITE as nasty as say a bear or wolf. They lack that "umph" but a lot of them provide a unique set of utility abilities for it.
Did that answer your question/concern? I know, at first glance, it looks like high but I assure you- we did our homework ;-)
