Rules Questions and Gameplay Discussion

I am a noob to the game, only buying it a few weeks ago, so I have a few questions I cannot seem to find an answer:

1) Can you use 2 one-handed weapons in a combat check, for example 2 hand crossbows?

2) Can you use more than one spell during a combat check?

3) When exactly do you die? For example, if I have 3 cards in my hand but my hand size is 5, and I have nothing in my deck, am I dead since my deck does not have enough cards for me to draw what I need?

4) what is the point of Balazar the summoner? I dont understand what he does.

Welcome to PACG.

1. Yes. The two handed trait will often matter for playing armor, specifically shields.

1. No. It doesn't matter that it is one handed or two handed. You can only ever use one card of each type per check or step. The fact that some weapons have the 2-handed trait will matter for playing other cards, such as the shield armors, which can't be played if you played a weapon with the 2-handed trait.

2. No. You can only use 1 card of each type per step or check. So, only 1 spell per combat check... unless a card tells you otherwise. Mirror Image and Arcane Armor, for example, tell you it is ok to play them even if you already played a spell.

Remember that each player may not play more than 1 card of each type or use any 1 power more than once during each check, other than cards that can be used each time something particular happens.

3. You die the moment you need to get (draw, bury, discard, etc) a card from your deck and there isn't one. So, imagine you have 3 cards in hand, 1 in your deck and a hand size of 5. At the end of your turn, you will need to reset your hand. You'll draw 1 card, making it 4 in your hand, and for a brief moment continue to be alive. Then, you'll need to draw 1 more. But there will be no more in your deck. Now, your character has died.

4. You need to check out his cohort Padrig. So, as Balazar defeats the typical monster, instead of banishing it (putting it back in the box) he instead puts it in his hand. He can then use those monsters to make Padrig do some serious damage.

By the way, which game do you have? Rise of the Runelords, Skull and Shackles, or Wrath of the Righteous?

? Usually you cannot use two one-handed weapons on a combat check. For a combat check, you can only use one card that defines the skill you are using. If you are using a weapon, it does this. Certain weapons allow you to play it in addition to another weapon (daggers, dancing scimitar); the card will say this explicitly.

Oops. I read the question wrong. I thought it was "can you use two handed weapons on a combat check?" My mistake. Thanks.

Thank you for your responses!

As a follow up to #3 above, we happened to be playing the scenario "Under the Broken City" which states "At the end of your turn, recharge a random card from your discard pile". So, given out example, if you recharge this random card from your discard pile BEFORE you reset your hand, you would still be alive. If AFTER, you would die. So, the question is, since both resetting your hand and this recharge happen "at the end of your turn", which one happens first?

Or, in a more general sense, if you have 2 effects that take place "at the end of your turn", does the player decide in which order they happen?

Wrath of the Righteous

If two effects happen at the same time, you decide the order. The exception would be if two effects happened at the same time, but one said "immediately." In that case, you'd have to do the immediate one first.

But, to your question in particular...

WotR Rulebook p9 wrote:
End Your Turn: First, apply any effects that happen at the end of the turn. While you do this, unless a power directed you to end your turn, you may play cards and use powers. If your number of mythic charges is greater than the scenario’s adventure deck number, discard any charges in excess of that number. Then, reset your hand (see Reset Your Hand on page 14). When you’re done, the turn passes to the player on your left.

The scenario power happens first, because the turn sequence tells you to apply effects that happen at the end of your turn and then reset your hand. The scenario power is one such effect. So, in this case, you can not choose the order. It must be scenario power, then reset your hand.

Another question I thought of:

I have been playing Adowyn, with this cohort Leryn. At the end of my turn, can I just leave Leryn displayed?

Also, my son has been playing Seoni, which seemed cool until we learned she can only use one spell per check or step. It seems she is limited to 2d4 + Arcane on a combat check unless she uses a blessing. Am I missing something?

Yes.

There are other spells that will do more for combat than Arcane + 2d4. But you'll have to acquire them. She's really in the same boat as someone using a weapon. They can't play two weapons. She can't play two spells.

Compare to someone playing Aklys.

Aklys wrote:
For your combat check, reveal this card to use your Dexterity or Ranged skill + 1d4; you may additionally recharge this card to add another 1d4, or discard it to add another 2d4 and the Piercing trait. If not proficient with weapons, the difficulty of this check is increased by 4.

Compare cost to what they get:

Reveal: Ranged + 1d4.
Recharge: Ranged + 2d4.
Discard: Ranged + 3d4.

Seoni can play Viper Stike and get Arcane + 2d4. She'll hope to recharge it. So for a recharged card, they are doing comparably the same thing.

WotR Seoni actually has an advantage though. Fail the recharge check intentionally and then use her power to get the spell from her discard pile. The weapon user is going to have to wait for that particular card to work its way but up the deck. But Seoni can get her spell back right away.

Ive seen mention in other posts and i need something clarified:

Let's say Adowyn and Seoni are at different location:

Can Adowyn use blessings to help Seoni's roll (or vice versa)?
Can Adowyn use spells to help Seoni's roll (or vice versa)?

Regardless of whose turn it is?

Yes. If there is a restriction on playing a card related to your location, the card will mention it. So, for example, Cure specifically says you have to choose a character at your location. Blessings (so far) have no such restriction. So you can play them regardless of where Adowyn and Seoni are located.

I refer you to Hawkmoon's excellent guide for beginners. It clears up many basic questions. It was written for Runelords, but it's still useful.

Hawkmoon's guide

Easy rules to start with : unless a card very specifically says otherwise :
Only one card saying "for your combat check" can be played on a combat check and those cards can only be played on COMBAT checks
Cards that refer to YOUR check cannot be used to help someone else's check
A single player can only play one card of each type during any check or (when out of a check) during each step
A character can only explore on her turn
It's the character exploring that encounters
It's the character encountering that attempts the checks except if there are multiple main checks (main by opposition to checks before or after you act for example) separate by "THEN" in which case the character encountering must do at least one of those but the rest can be attempted by others at the same location

You can check more precise rules later but that's an easy start
