Reoccuring Villian

Reign of Winter

One of my parties was unable to kill Nazhena and I was going to have her come back as a reoccurring villain. I was thinking about putting her in front of the hut in Iobaria to greet them after they return from Artrosa. Problem is, they are way higher level now. So I figured I would team her up with an NPC Galenna Icethrone, 2 officers and another Ice Golem. Do you think this encounter is strong enough? CR 10. Does anyone have recommendations?

I figured Nazhena has been scrying on them and followed the hut to this location. Ratibor (by GM choice) is currently with party in Artrosa. Maybe Nazhena and the crew is inside or on the deck.

Any ideas would be appreciated.

Forgot to mention they are party of 4 @ level 9 each.

I would level Nazhena a few times, at least to level 9 to keep up with the PCs. I would dispense with the ice golem. She already tried that, it didn't work. Some new ice-themed monster, about CR 7-8 would be fun. Seven-headed Cryohydra, perhaps?

What were you planning for those 3 other party members?

One thing I would recommend is keeping a tally on reocurring enemies' actions as the game goes on. Remember PCs get saving throws to things like scrying and Nightmare (I highyly recommended the Bowl of Troubled Sleep - a third party item that Nazhena could be using to torment them from afar with before she confronts them again).

As for minions, when she shows up again, instead of an ice golem might I reccomend a frost themed Graveknight. Also level her up to level 10 and give her shiney trinkets that counter PC abilities she knows about (gloves of missile snaring, ring of counterspells etc).

If you really want to use her again give her an escape plan (Dimension Door or Boots of Escape) and have her reaapear on Traxius allied with Yrax.

Basically Cauldron of Overwhelming Allies won the party the fight and she was taken to the ground by webs from spiders. The Barbarian decided he wanted to interrogate her and after a few failed sense motives he decided he would let her go (despite the Investigator in the party was saying, no no that's not a great idea and succeeded his sense motive check.) So the Barbarian told her that if she keeps to her word, after they deal with Elvanna and Baba Yaga perhaps he can come back and make her his queen. Well that guy died after he tried to run out of the hut in Iobaria to face a Giant and turns out... it only took 1 Giant to take him down (not to mention he was at half health from the Witchdaughters Nightmare and never rested or healed).

However, Nazhena remembers the one survivor of the group who was there that day. He was once a Witches apprentice and something went terribly wrong and now he despises witches. So I see plenty of reason to send her after them, to not fail Elvanna. So I sent some Winter Wolves after them and he has an idea somethings up. The Bowl of Troubled Sleep is a great idea. Perhaps I can give him a nightmare before they finish Artrosa.

I am ultimately hoping the fight lasts longer than 1 round now that I banned the Cauldron from the game. Trust me that item is bad news.

Graveknight is a good idea too, considering it's already on an encounter chart for book 3 or 4.

Oh that brings me to another question. I don't think the hut will willingly let her on the porch or even inside. Would that be an accurate assumption?

That's a really good question and I would like to hear some opinions on how this would work. From what I can see, anyone can enter the hut. Heck, one of the huts attacks is fast swallow; through the front door!

The hut serves the PCs as horsemen of baba yaga. Since Elvanna is kin it probably wouldn't attack her. Maybe allow her a UMD DC 30 check to be let in.
