My Diviner wizard wants to make an item that is like a lesser version of a crystal ball. I was going to have it cast Clairaudience/clairvoyance once per day with a command word. If I go by the item creation rules It would look something like this.
Spell Level (3) x Caster Level (5) x 1,800 = 27,000 it only has 1 charge per day so total divided by (5/1=5) 27,000/5 = 5,400gp.
Do I multiply the price by 2 for it not taking up an item slot since it is just a glass ball? or does that only apply to worn items that don't take up a slot like a brooch of shielding?
If anyone could check my math and reasoning before I submit it to the dm that would be helpful. thanks in advance.
Technically a crystal ball would be slotless and pay the premium for it, however if you aren't planning to use it in combat that really doesn't matter, it could be a hat and make no difference. You could say it takes up the eyeslot because you cant't have anything block the woowoo rays it projects from entering your brain while it is used, or hand slot because you need to hold it with bare flesh, or point these facts out to your gm and just ask to pay the lower cost.
If we were talking about a continuous/use-activated item which was granting you some kind of bonus (like a Stone of Good Luck) then the unslotted multiplier would be used to modify the price. But since we are talking about a non-combat/non-buff spell-replicating item it shouldn't be applied since you won't be using it in combat anyway.
It doesn't even matter if you make it an "unslotted" item or randomly assign the power to a string lying in the street and call it an amulet.
Alternatively, if you want to be on the safe side... You could make a pair of gloves that are activated by concentrating on the palms of your hands, and after 10 minutes a crystal ball animates which would let you cast said spell.
And the math is right. No problem there.
