Tripping, size, and failure

Rules Questions

Two points on tripping:
1) When you perform the Trip maneuver and fail by 10 or more, you are automatically knocked prone.
2) You can only trip an opponent who is no more than one size category larger than you.
If you attempt to trip someone who is more than one size category smaller than you and you fail by 10+, are you still tripped? I guess it's a matter of if you picture that level of failure to be you fumbling so bad that you fall on your face or if you think of it as the opponent turning the tables and judo-flipping you.

Second question:
As combat maneuvers are attack rolls, you automatically fail if you roll a natural 1. If you roll a Natural 1 on a trip attempt, are you tripped? Or should we compare CMB+1 vs CMD to check for the situation reversal?

No matter what size you are if you fail by ten you go prone(with trip weapon exceptions)

A nat 1 is not always less than 10. For example a gnome with CMD of 6, getting tripped by a guy with 5 bab rolls a 1. It fails because it is a 1, but the total results are still 6 meaning it is not less than 10. So he has no chance of going prone.

The Exchange

1) Yes, unless you're using a trip weapon, then you can choose to let go of the weapon and not go prone. The size of the opponent does not change the failure result.

2)Wrong. You can still roll a nat 1, suceed in the said maneuver, assuming you beat the opponents CMD.

You can't succeed on a maneuver when rolling a 1. It is an automatic failure.

Quote:
Determine Success: If your attack roll equals or exceeds the CMD of the target, your maneuver is a success and has the listed effect. Some maneuvers, such as bull rush, have varying levels of success depending on how much your attack roll exceeds the target's CMD. Rolling a natural 20 while attempting a combat maneuver is always a success (except when attempting to escape from bonds), while rolling a natural 1 is always a failure.

Oooh. Should have tracked all those nat 1s of a certain tetori. Will keep it in mind in the future, I thought it worked like skill checks.

CMB rolls behave essentially just like modified attack rolls. Anything that adds to attack rolls also adds to CMB. So, they follow the natural 1 and 20 rule.
