Level 1 Underwater Adventure Prep


Advice


What would a team of 6 level 1s need to be able to adventure underwater for a single day?

Are there any cheap mundane items that can help in the endeavor?


Underwater adventures require you to have a few more levels under your belt, unless you're all Gillmen, Undines, and Merfolk.


Well half the party is super into saving some mermaids right now, so not much of a choice in the matter.


Have a higher-level NPC cast Aboleth's Lung on them.


Will that help with all the other problems of being underwater or just breathing?


They'll still need to swim on their own. The spells that address other issues won't be available until several levels later. Monkey Fish gives you a slow swim speed, but it's also a minute per level duration. Freedom of Movement is 7th level, at least.

For equipment, get piercing weapons and underwater crossbows.

There is always a choice.

Have a higher level party of NPCs some in and tell the PCs "Stand back. We are already working on this" and then either enlist the PCs to help with a more minor part of the 'saving of the mermaids' or shuffle them off to a more appropriate adventure.

It's okay though, DM fiat pretty much solved everything
