Aasimar,Tiefling and Dhampir ages

Pathfinder First Edition General Discussion

ok so i see different age categories for these three all over the place as far as max age ect goes which is the real age category and where can it actually be found if one of these two aren't.

and i also found http://www.d20pfsrd.com/alignment-description/description

I know as far as starting ages go, they wanted Tieflings and Aasimar to mature at the regualr human rate, but their lifespans might be longer as per the particular bloodline.

Those 3 races now as per a recent Errata have a adulthood age of 20 and age at the same rate as humans.

I find it strange though as Dhampir specifically calls out their longevity in the races description. Also now all 3 have a shorter adventuring life than their human counterparts (effectively 5 less years of adulthood).

Errata:

Errata Wrote wrote:

"Page 248—In Table 5–2: Featured Race Random Starting

Ages, change the Adulthood ages for the Aasimar,
Dhampir, and Tiefling entries to “20 years”."

The things are...weird.

They had a long lived set of starting ages and age categories, which were at least self consistent, if not going with that one desire (ie- all tieflings end up like forlorn elves)

But they changed the starting ages age categories to something more human ish....but they didn't change the random bits (ie- your age is starting age + a dice roll). So it is entirely possible to have a tiefling wizard that goes from level 1 straight to the nursing home. 20+8d6= 68....2 years from 'venerable'.

Another way to think about it- the average human wizard is fully trained by age 22, and the average tiefling wizard is fully trained at age 48... and they have the same life span as a normal human

I would rather have something that is wrong, but it is consistent with itself and works well with other concepts in the setting (forlorn elves, which is a kind of character concept that works VERY well for tieflings and aasimar; getting by either by stealing or on the kindness of strangers) than for them to correct it, and then find that it is messed up in an inconsistent way. Fixing it so you have to fix it twice is embarassing in publishing.

James Jacobs posted an unofficial fix which can be found here. :)

[At this point, the simplest solution is to just use all the numbers for half-elves in place of aasimars and tieflings and dhampirs.

Edit: His post was shorter than I recalled, might as well add the relevant quote here as well.

I have a 68 year old tiefling. He went from the prime of his life to 2 years from death in an instant. It's a good thing I hadn't been aging him, or the errata would have killed him.
