Arcane Eye (Possible Spoilers)

Rise of the Runelords

So I'm running Rise of the Runelords campaign. They are in Sins of the Saviors within the Runeforge. They started in the Greed section and they returned to where they portaled into Runeforge.

While resting the Wizard decided to cast Arcane Eye and they read the description and looked to me and said we are going to go down every area and see what's there. So just give him the maps since it says a invisible eye and no one would see it.

I read the description myself, trying to see if there was anything I could do to prevent this but found nothing?

Is it that easy to use this spell?

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Yup, though there's certain things that may come into play.

1. Creatures that can see invisible or don't rely on sight may take notice of the scrying sensor.

2. Most of the creatures in Runeforge are distrustful of the other wings and may start preparing defenses/launching offensives if they detect the Arcane Eye.

3. Certain location based effects (I'm looking at you envy wing) may prove detrimental to a magic flying sensor. Other effects won't trigger and probably aren't noticeable while just using Arcane Eye (pride wing comes to mind). I think the wrath wing also has some kind of teleporter that may not work on the eye.

In the end, there's nothing wrong with the wizard using this spell to scout ahead. Runeforge is one of the primary areas where a scouting mission can allow him to prepare excellent spells to handle the situations that come up, so it really plays to the wizard's strengths. Let him have his fun (as long as the other players have fun too).

Grand Lodge

I know this is a bit older thread but...

Just remember all creatures get a DC 24 perception check to spot the arcane eye sensor (Core Rule Book page 210). Then you can decide what they do about it.

I personally think that the more intelligent creatures that spot one of these will be suspicious and try to catch it or hit it. Max speed 30 is not going to let it get away easily.

My group did this to scout out Fort Rennick. I gave every ogre a chance to spot it. It was spotted 4 times but being dumb old ogers they did not think much and just reported seeing a strange floating orb. The bosses on the other hand made plans for a defense and I moved the ogres around. The party may have had a crude map, but all the critters were not where they expected them.

As a GM I actually hate this spell. First I think it is too low a level for what it can do. Secondly, you have to go through the whole duration of the spell and that takes up a lot of game time. Meanwhile all the other players are sitting there twiddling their thumbs. I think it slows the game down and takes some of the mystery of the adventure out of the game.
