Advise for what paints to buy

Advice

Sczarni

Hello everyone. First of all, apologies of this is in the wrong thread area. I have bought the new D&D collector's miniature Adult Red Dragon which does require assembly and painting. I am relatively new to the area of assembling and painting miniatures and was hoping the box would include a listing of what paints to buy for proper painting of the miniature. To my shame, it does not include any such list like the warhammer mini boxes do. I am asking for a list of advise on which paints to purchase for the painting of such a great mini. Any quality advise will be greatly appreciated.

Paint some smaller, less awesome minis to improve your painting skills first. You could pick specific paints ahead of time, but in my experience you would be better served by using different paints to become more familiar with them before taking on the dragon. It could end up a spectacular piece. Have patience.

I agree with Ciaran. Practice on smaller minis and work on your skill.

I've had a lot of luck with Citadel paints (the same company that makes Warhammer). You can find them online or at most game stores that sell their games.

They're a little more expensive than the acrylics you can get at a hobby store, but I think they're better quality. They also have a good range of colors and styles.
Avoid oil-based paints.
Also, I suggest getting a few different brushes to see which ones you're most comfortable using. It's usually worth it to spend a little more to get higher quality brushes.

Also, you might want to pick up a small can of matte varnish to protect it after you're done painting. If applied properly, you don't really notice it and it makes the paint a lot harder to damage.
