Harrowing?

Advice

Can someone please, possibly, explain the Harrower and Harrowing to me. I like the idea of the card dealer character and it would be awesome to play but I really do not understand this concept. Do I use a deck of normal card, do I need to buy special ones, I am a little lost.

Harrow cards are basically Golarion's version of tarot cards, used for fortune telling. You can buy harrow decks from Paizo, or you can use a die to simulate it for use with the harrower class. Harrow cards have six suits, one for each of the primary stats (Strength, Dexterity, etc.) The harrower works based on drawing cards from a harrow deck and getting bonusus based on the suit. Instead, you can just roll a d6 and assign each number to one suit. (The cards are a little flashier and more fun, though. :) They also let you incorporate proper readings into gameplay - the deck comes with instructions on doing readings.)

I think the preferred deck of cards used for both is the "harrowing deck".

Harrowing Deck:

Harrow Cards This is a traditional fortune-telling deck of cards used by soothsayers and seers. Each Harrow deck consists of 54 cards divided into six suits of nine cards. The six suits correspond to the six ability scores (hammer for Strength, key for Dexterity, shield for Constitution, book for Intelligence, star for Wisdom, and crown for Charisma). Each card in a suit further ties in with one of the nine alignments, corresponding to the location of the symbol on the face of the card. In addition, each card has its own unique name, independent of its suit and alignment.

Do you have a Harrow Handbook? That is probably the best resource for learning various aspects of how Harrowing works on Golarion.

You'll want a Harrow Deck. It has great artwork.

If it's just the card throwing you like, there are a few archetypes of normal classes that capture it fairly well - witch and magus are the two I remember easiest. Some of them could even be separated from the specific harrow flavor, if you wanted to do it with playing cards or something. Also, check out the Arcane Strike and Deadly Dealer feats.

I own a deck - it's quite pretty. :)

I do not have a Harrow Handbook, do I buy that through Paizo?
I knew Magus had the card caster which looked fun but I have seen Harrowing a few times in archetypes and such and was never sure what the heck it was.

Yeah, basically a harrowing is a tarot card reading, that interacts with a few archetypes/classes/spells to give buffs.

And yes, you can buy it through Paizo, at least on PDF (I can't remember if they sell it in print anymore).

EDIT: Yes, they still have it in print. :)

Link for the lazy.

Thanks, this looks like it might be fun and it will be unique enough to give me some funny looks.

Also big Yu Gi Oh fans so I am gonna love the card aspect.. now if only there was a summoner archetype.

Did someone say summoner archetype?

I literally just found that!

Ok can I make a Dark Magician or a Blue Eyes?

Not any more so than a normal summoner, alas. ^_^

A dragon shouldn't be too hard as long as you're using the original summoner, but you'll need custom/homebrew content for any sort of magic-blasting eidolon.

Well they seem to get a magic attack evolution. So what does that do?

Just makes their attacks count as magic for overcoming DR.

What about minor magic evolution? Major Magic or Ultimate Magic?

They exist, but they won't get you very far - especially since eidolons are so low-Charisma. Eidolons are heavily pushed in favor of clawing people to pieces. :(

Yeah but not everyone's eidolons should have to be the same to be effective. It would give limited magic abilities. Like Scorching Ray would be a good spell to use for a magic blast. Could Eidolons use a wand?

If they had Use Magic Device, yes - the Skilled evolution would be a good way to make sure it works.

The quarterstaff of entwined serpents would be good here. In fact, UMD isn't even required for the staff...

...

Now I may have to do this for Mummy's Mask.

This is a very interesting idea now. Hmm I need to save a few bucks on my next payday to get this stuff.

The Harrow Deck is amazing, both in and out of game. Enjoy!

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Well I am gonna try and get it my Fiance Larps as a Gypsies so she has a Tarot card deck so she likes the idea.

Also she is in love with Gambit and Magus (Staff Magus + Card Caster) can be a Gambit character.
