Revision of spells : Material component

Pathfinder First Edition General Discussion

Grand Lodge

Hi,

as preambule : I'm not found of tracking M components, and I agree that a component spell pouch should cover the basic needs for most spells.

however, I think that some spells should have their M changed into F (focus)

e.g. Monstrous Physique I - a level 3 spell (among many others)
the M part is a piece of the form you want to take.
for wizards with spell pouch (or anyone with eschew) this means that you can take the form of a Popobala (Medium monstrous humanoid from bestiary 3) with 5 natural attacks...

so, imho, for any spells that has a variable M component, it should become a F.
this would also give the GM a greater control on the available choices.

Foci are also in the pouch unless the material component has a listed price. Bits of monstrous humanoids don't, so you haven't actually gotten anywhere with your adjustments.

Personally, I would throw out all material components or foci that don't have a cost. It's just mechanical noise. Plus I don't think anyone will miss the absurdity of the quantum spell pouch.

If you want to to restrict the ability for polymorph spells to turn you into pretty much anything you want, that's better addressed by changing the polymorph spells specifically, not by making system wide changes (that don't actually fix the "problem").

it's not only polymorph, it's all those negligible component (without cost in GP) that are not realistic for a low-level wizard to have so easily

infernal healing (spell level 1) : required blood of a devil.
Could be easy to find in cheliax, no so in some other CG places.

I was not aware for the focus being in the component pouch, it makes even less sense to have a distinction (for non-expensive ones)

so a sorcerer (with eschew material) should still have a component pouch for the non-expensive foci ? (as it removes only the material component part)

imho, this could use some minor fine-tuning.
