Are Smoked Goggles of any use against magic Symbols.

Rules Questions

I'm playing a rogue in our Crimson Throne, Curse, etc. campaign, and we've run across a Symbol of Sleep that put our Cleric's barbarian cohort under just before a Darksphynx gave us the Riddle of Steel (catastrophic twinned kukri attacks).

As the guy at the front disarming traps, would wearing smoked goggles count as averting my eyes from Symbols?

No. You cannot "avert" your eyes from Symbol spells.

But the smoked goggles would give you the +8 (!) saving throw bonus against looking at or reading the symbol. But if you touched it, passed over it, or walked through a symbol-protected portal, you save as normal without any benefit of the goggles.

Grand Lodge

If you're averting your eyes, then you can't see to disarm the trap.

Some more info on how goggles interact on this can be found here:

At least I get the +8 on that, too...
