Improvised weapon query-or Can i use a bucket on a rope as an improvised weapon?

Liberty's Edge

The title should explain this, but what i was wondering about was if the players or enemies (with the relevent feats like catch off guard) could combine non weapon objects into an improvised weapon (like a horse shoe on a rope). i imagine it would be possible to tie a length of rope or sting onto a dagger to make it easier to retrieve(but limiting range), but i'm not clear if you could have a bucket on a rope and use that as an impromptu flail/ meteor hammer.

I really don't see why you couldn't.

Meteor Hammer? Yeah, you could certainly do this and might even get trip and reach like a meteor hammer, but I have a hard time picturing a bucket hitting that hard, unless that bucket is made of adamantium or is full of bricks. A d8 is actually a lot of damage. I would think a simple empty pail, or a horseshoe, wouldn't do more than a d4. Maybe a cast-iron cauldron (no, not like witches cook full-sized people in, but more like a good-sized stew pot) might make it up to a d6, or even a d8 if it holds a lot of stew.

Of course, as with all improvised weapons, it's up to each GM to decide if he'll allow the improvised weapon and to assign it a damage value.

That said, there would not even be any weapons like meteor hammers or even longswords if people could just grab a rope and a pail and be equally deadly.

Side note: Jackie Chan's horseshoe-on-a-rope scene was great fun indeed.

"Chon Wang is a terrible cowboy name..."

Ya, that is exactly the kind of thing that Improvised Weapons are all about. Ask yourself "could Jackie Chan do this?" if the answer is "yes", then you are good to go.

Improvised weapons are really a catch-all term for anything that isn't covered by a normal weapon. This allows you to wield grandfather clocks, throw chamber pots; but it also allows you to wield a sword by the blade and pummel people with the pommel (this would make a 1d8 19-20/x2 slashing longsword act like as an improvised club for 1d6 x2 bludgeoning).

Edit: however, keep in mind that although a bucket on a rope is "like" a meteor hammer - at the same time it is also just a bucket on a rope. As a GM I'd treat it as a 1d4 x2 bludgeoning weapon (with reach if the rope is fairly long).

Liberty's Edge

the funny thing about the whole horseshoe on a rope thing is it actually helps against fay. A legend about a bunch of Fay vampires(I forget the name but they do exist in Irish folklore) was unable to reach a man surrounded by horses because of their cold iron shoes. If you combine one of those horseshoes with a good amount of rope, you have a 1d4(or 6) weapon with reach that can be used to knock fay heads together. Repurposing a sack of gold into a bludgeon could be handy in a pinch(gold can be quite heavy sometimes).

Thinking about effectivly using your resources can really devistating to any body. Black powder is flammable so a small keg and a little fire can deal an incredible amount of damage to a lock, door, or unfortunate victim. And your gunslinger or alchemist can get a good amount of it. booze and fire is a burning incident waiting to happen. And it become funny to watch a impromptu weapons expert eviserating a dragon with items taken from their own hoard...though you would still need to not get obliterated by the dragons breath weapons, magic and very numerous natural weapons. An adventurer looks at his adventures kit and sees tools he can use, a good improvised weapons expert sees an armoury of secretive weapons that can fufil many purposes as well as tools for dealing with obstacles.
