Lini's Powers Interacting (S&S)

Rules Questions and Gameplay Discussion

I just wanted to clarify something. Lini's two powers are:

Quote:

When you play an ally that has the Animal trait, if you would recharge, discard, or bury it for its power, you may instead shuffle it into your deck.

You may discard a card to use a d12 for your Strength or Dexterity die; if the check is against a card that has the Animal or Aquatic trait, recharge the card instead.

Does this mean that when you discard a card to bump up your die (Power 2), you can discard an ally with the Animal trait to shuffle it into your deck? I'm not quite clear on the distinction between playing the card and using a card to activate a power: does using a card to activate a power count as playing it?

Playing a card means using the card's text.

Rulebook page 9:
"Doing something with a card that does not use a power on that card does not count as playing that card. For example, when Seelah discards a spell to use a power on her character card, the discarded card does not count as being played (meaning she also can’t recharge it)."

No. From the S&S Rulebook, page 9, under Playing a card:

S&S Rulebok wrote:
Anyone can play a card whenever the card allows it. Playing a card means using a power on that card by revealing, displaying, discarding, recharging, burying, or banishing that card or by performing another action specified by that card. If a power says using it counts as playing a boon, it counts as playing a card. Doing something with a card that does not use a power on that card does not count as playing that card. For example, when Alahazra discards a card to use a power on her character card, the discarded card does not count as being played (meaning she also can’t recharge it).

Ninja'd! But i'll keep the post anyway.

Yep, you've got to use the animal for the power written on the Animal card, not any other effect.

Lini is still very strong though - lots and lots of banes in S&S are Aquatic. I ended up taking the Aquamancer role and often used "captured" monsters to power her d12 abilities. Also, once you can "top-deck" animals, she becomes an exploration machine.
