Combat climbing and acrobatics questions

Rules Questions

Hi, I am making a character who will start out at level 1 with a guaranteed 25 climb check, so I will be climbing all over the place a lot, but I'm not sure about the following:

1) If I get hit by an arrow or something while climbing, normally I would take a climb check. Does this still apply while clinging to a wall with 3 limbs and one hand doing something else (which it says you can do but doesn't specify if it affects saves, etc.).

2) Would I also still get my dex bonus to AC while clinging with 3 limbs (I normally do since I have a racial climb speed)?

3) As long as I have both hands free and the ground has a texture I would normally be able to climb can I climb horizontally at my climb speed along the ground or a rope etc? The idea being pulling myself along as if a wall. Or climbing a rope stretched across a gap.

"A slope is considered to be any incline at an angle measuring less than 60 degrees" implies that unless it's polished marble built carefully to be perfectly level (which couldn't climb anyway due to perfect smoothness), the ground would also be a "slope" and thus climbable crosswise. Which I wouldn't feel bad about exploiting since it also makes perfectly good common sense. But maybe I'm missing some other rule on this.

4) Can you stealth + accelerated climb and cancel each other out? (character has a natural climb speed, so accelerated = 2x speed normally)

Sovereign Court

1) You get hit while climbing you make a climb check vs the DC of the wall. No exceptions.

2) If you have a climb speed you retain your dex bonus to AC.

3) What? Are you talking about the ceiling? If it's the floor just walk.... For the rope you'd use the Narrow Surfaces section for walking across the rope. You could probably climb the rope across but the DC would be a little higher most likely since it's horizontal.

Most people would be moving at 1/4 their speed and making climb checks every time they wanted to advance. Since you have a climb speed you're looking at moving as fast as your climb speed, you can take a -5 penalty and move at double your climb speed or as fast as your land speed, whichever is slower is the one you'd be moving at with accelerated climbing.

4) Don't know your climb speed, but if regular land speed is less than 2x your climb speed you'd use your regular land speed when accelerated climbing. Using Stealth you'd move at half that speed unless you decided to take the penalty to Stealth to move at your full speed.

1 & 2) I am not trying to get out of making a climb check. The opposite: I'm asking whether I should even be ALLOWED to make a climb check versus simply falling. Since it says you need 2 hands to actually climb, but you can "cling in place" with 3, that makes it ambiguous whether, while you are clinging, if you would have the mobility to stop yourself from falling at all if you got shot? Do you have to end your turn with both hands free to get your AC and your chance to not fall?

3) I know that I can walk. I'm telling you I don't want to always walk. Am I allowed to climb instead? I gave an example of why in the OP: Say there is a rope stretching across a gorge horizontally. Walking would imply tight rope walking and uses an insanely high acrobatics check for a 1" wide surface. I would prefer to shimmy using climb skill, since my climb is vastly higher. An unknotted rope is like DC 15 or something, auto-succeed for me. Similarly, if I were in a tree branch sniping at people, I don't want to walk (acrobatics, pommel horse). I want to climb along the limb sideways (much safer for my character), switching my bow to one hand at the end of my turn and clinging with 3 limbs. But the rules are ambiguous whether I'm allowed to climb along a surface below me at all. It is also possible for a race to have a faster climb than walk speed in which case they may want to climb along the ground for general overland travel over rough surfaces (like forest floors)

4) For sake of argument, let's say my climb speed is 20 and my walk speed is 30. I choose to do stealth before I choose to accelerated climb. So I'm at 10 climb now (stealth). If I now want to accelerated climb while still stealthed, it should be double speed, but never more than walk speed (which is fine, because 10x2 < 30). So I should be back up to 20 yes?

1/2) You still make the climb check even if you are currently unable to continue up or down because of lacking "both hands free", however I don't see any penalties involved (to anything other than dex to AC if you don't have a Climb speed).

I read the "to climb" clause as relevant to 'progress', not 'use of the skill' given the entire context.

4) No, this does not allow you to eke out extra movement during stealth... you may be able to confuse some GM's into allowing this, but the stealth restriction (which prevents a penalty to your roll, not your actual speed) is applied to the total, it does not change how fast you can actually move.

For a creature with Speed 30ft. Climb 20ft. an accelerated climb is capped at 30ft and you can move/climb up to 15ft whiled stealthed before taking a penalty during that action.

3) I assume this was contingent on #4 working, but it's been discussed a few times (usually for creatures with climb >> land) and these situations are simply not covered by the rules. As such it's the realm of GM decision.
