Draconic Sorcerer; Dragon Disciple and Breath Weapon Question

Liberty's Edge

Did a little searching and didn't find very much on this ...

If you have a Draconic Sorcerer / Dragon Disciple (say a 5th level draconic Sorcerer / 7th level Dragon Disciple) The breath weapon you get at 3rd level is more powerful (12d6 2/day) than the breath weapon you get as part of Dragon form you get at 7th level (6d8 only once while in dragon form)

I assume you track the two breath weapons separately (i.e. 'normal' breath weapon 2/day at 12d6 PLUS an additional breath weapon 1/day but only while in dragon form at 6d8 )?

If so, it seems sort of counter-intuitive that your breath weapon gets worse when you take on the actual shape of a dragon ...

Yes, you do track them separately.

Blame it on the Dragon Form spells actually being kind of terrible at making you into a dragon. They're more "big bruiser" than an actual dragon.

This problem gets hilariously worse when a Robe of Arcane Heritage is thrown in. Then, that 12th level Sorcerer's breath weapon is 16D6, while his Dragon Form weapon is 6D8... literally half as good.

Shadow Lodge

Yes, you track them separately.

You can always use your bloodline's breath weapon while in dragon form, as well, so it's not so much that your breath weapon gets worse as you get access to an extra (but weaker) use of that breath weapon.

Yes, it's a little counter-intuitive but the Draconic Bloodline and the Form of the Dragon spell were designed and balanced separately so it's not surprising that the latter's breath weapon ended up weaker.
