Survival to supply Craft

Advice

Grand Lodge

One of my players is makeing a Elf Ranger (Archer) in the new game and had a Idea that I am thinking about. This player has asked me if he can use his Survival to get the stuff he would need to make his own arrows in the woods. Look at the skill you get enogh food for one person for ever 2 you pass the DC you can feed another person. I was think to alow him to say instead of a person he can get the crafting resourses for 10 arrow since rations are normal .5 gold and you can make 20 arrows for .33 gold when crafting.

What do you all think?

It depends on what he's actually doing. Survival isn't the same thing as mining.

If he wants to make bone arrowheads and attach them with rawhide and glue from animal skins, that's easily possible. People have been doing that for thousands of years all over the world.

If he wants to make steel arrowheads, he'll need a furnace.

The problem is that there are rules for primitive weapons and such arrows are generally not as good at steel ones (which is why people use steel ones if they have a chance). E.g., "Bone weapons have half the hardness of their base weapons and have the fragile weapon quality. [...] Bone weapons take a –2 penalty on damage rolls (minimum 1 damage)."

And when he takes it further and wants to make a chain shirt from flint and bearskins, the answer is just "no."

Yea I know this player and it is not so much about getting it for free but Role play him making and using his own arrows and I would agree to never letting him make a Chain shirt like this.

Thank you for the link of Primitive weapons like that as I will have him making them out of Bone or Stone.

I would allow it... A successfull check could indicate he found an ,a few days old, ambushsite, so iron arrowheads is definately possible, even without a furnace...

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Obsidian is very useful for arrows, since the fragile property doesn't mean as much for ammunition and there's no damage penalty.

He might also be able to salvage arrowheads from used arrows. There's a 50% chance that the ammunition breaks but that includes any form of damage - you might have the shaft snap or the fletching ruined while the arrowhead itself is undamaged (especially if shooting at a lightly-armoured target).

Unless you're in a survivalist game where resource management is very important I'd just let him do this. Many games don't track mundane arrows at all, with little effect on the game.

Always wondered... what would the to hit penalty and damage penalty be for using..... Wood.

??

Just shooting people with sharpened sticks ??
