Fiddling around with a new AP concept - War in the Heavens / Fallen Angels...

I'd love some input. I run my own world, so canon means nothing to me (though I do draw from it).

The idea is that some of the angels have fallen. They aren't demons/devils/what have you yet, but they someday will be.

For now, I just have some muddy ideas. There is an ongoing war in the heavens. Two or three of the gods have decided that the mortal races are just failures - that the prime just isn't going the right direction - what have you. I'm thinking this is a case of LG gods deciding that too much free will and freedom in general has failed all of creation, so they've become dangerous, and their servants are coming to the prime to 'correct things' as the war rages.

I think I like the idea that, sometime during the conflict, one of the gods dies, and his host of angels descend upon the prime with a vengeance. The god rises again, undead, and things really go bad.

I love templates, so a lot of the upper-end challenges will be templated angels. Some might be devils or what have you as they finally change - a whole new 'race' of devils might be fun, here.

Just to explain a bit more about my world - I'm a huge Lovecraft fan, and there are gods much older and more powerful than the 'mortal' gods of my campaign - it would have been one of them that instigated the whole thing, just to watch it happen (or with a strange, mysterious motive of it's own, more likely).

So - I welcome any input, from more ideas on the war itself, to better concepts about the fall, or just pet ideas about individual angels or even gods caught up in a mess like this!

Oh, definitely mythic.

I had an idea long ago where the party is good, but the villain is an not-fallen angel. Obviously, the details would be very important.

Definitely. How did your idea play out?

I never got to use it. Such an idea would require a suitably epic campaign. My idea was that the angel in more in sync with his L - and less with his G - to the point that he subverts his deity's authority to do what he thinks is right. This culminates in him striking up a deal with devils, and eventually doing evil by his own hand, believing it willl lead to a greater good.

This idea has more to do with outer planes politics, and would be difficult to believably run. Its why I haven't tried. Your idea with good-turned-evil angels would be more cut and dry, and you could actually pull it off. I like the undead angel bit.

Cool.

It still takes quite a bit of finagling, which is why I'm looking for ideas. There will end up being plotholes a mile wide if I don't really think it through. ;)

Hmmm. I was just looking at an interesting squad - base CR of 18+:

A group of movanic deva blood knights led by a chalkydri blood knight. The backstory on that would just have to be insane - and the themes I can see coming out of it...wow.

Scholar: "Well, to do that, you'd need angel's blood, and a fair amount."

PC: "Angel's blood? Where can I get that?"

Scholar: "Oh, boy..."

Further polish on the little squad - Ftr2 gives them the right vibe, and plate armor makes more sense. It ramps up to a CR 20 encounter - and a wicked fight for a party of 15th - 17th levels. (I like slightly large parties - 5 or 6.)
