Halfling Cavalier Advice

Advice

I am pretty set on the feats being Power Attack, Mounted Combat, Ride-By Attack, and Spirited Charge. I am playing PFS and I wanted to know if there are many scenarios where if I were to play a human on a horse I would have to dismount and leave my horse behind.

I am trying to do as MUCH Damage AS POSSIBLE while still being able to ride into battle consistantly. Should I take the beast-rider archetype and would I be able to do much more damage? I want to hold onto the heavy-armor proficiency if the archetype doesn't give me significant boosts in abilities and damage.

I will be weilding a lance so are there any mounts that can match my reach and still be able to go indoors and in dungeons?

Before I get spirited charge should I use a greatsword or a lucerene hammer?

Are you married to the idea of a halfling? The Dex boost is really wasted if you go heavy armor. Halflings make great archery based Cavaliers, but if you want to do the lance-wielding traditional sort, Gnomes are a better fit (and can talk to their mount!), or humans with the Slight Build feat can ride a medium mount, negating the biggest drawback about playing a medium sized Cavalier.

From your feat choices, I'd recommend going with Gendarme/Beast Rider archetypes, since they stack. You'll get literally ALL of those feats as bonuses, giving up the (in my opinion anyway) crappy Tactician ability.

EDIT: After looking at Beast Rider more closely, the fact you lose the heavy armor proficiency and pretty much HAVE to take a Large mount kind of sours the deal. Also the loss of Heavy Armor proficiency means your build won't quite fit what you envisioned, but I personally don't find it THAT bad of a tradeoff.

If you're going to be a small sized character, I would say Lucerne Hammer all the way since you'd just be trading a slightly expanded crit range for Reach. (Reach > Crit range to me, unless you're investing in getting something like 15-20)

Slight build you say? Where is that? It sounds awesome and I will do that.

Halflings make fantastic cavaliers.

They have a racial feat, Risky striker, that trads 1 AC for a second power attack feat, basically.

Yes, that is 2 damage +2 more for every 4 BAB (no 2handing bonus though). And this stacks with power attack. So that means you can get fantastic damage.

And yes, that is only 1 AC ever, not a scaling thing. Not sure why, that that is what the text says.

You can more than easily make a great str based build. The penalty to str seems like it hurts, but the size bonus means that your attack rolls are basically unaffected. So it only affects damage...and again, risky striker more than makes up for such problems.

So overall- grab a lance and have fun.

That also sounds awesome but, they have to be large or bigger for it to work.
Still, I created a human that does 3d8+30 damage first level. Anyone want a one-shot?

Also what book is slight build in?

Found it! It is actually Undersized Mount.

Personally, I think Fruain Thistlefoot is probably one of the best built small size mounted characters I've seen built for PFS, and usually suggest a similar build if you're looking to be a mounted charger. Unless of course you want to ride a flying mount, at which point you should be a Verminous Hunter with a giant wasp mount.

Also, the problem with cavaliers and Undersized Mount for PFS is that it doesn't actually add any mounts to your available mounts list, and the cavalier lists them by size. So technically, even though you can ride a pony, because you're medium size you have to select a horse. Beast Rider kind of gets around this by being able to select mounts that become large at higher levels, however you can just take the optional +2 to Dex and Con instead of the size bonuses.
