I haven't been able to get a good answer to my various questions about the use of shields as weapons. With the Bashing enhancement you can do extra damage, that I get, but can a shield be used with both hands for extra damage? Can you add weapon enhancements to a shield such as Flaming, or Ghost Touch?

Yes, and yes.
Heavy and Light Shields are Martial Weapons.
They can be used with any feat that specifies a weapon, like Weapon Focus, or used with a spell that specifies a weapon, like Magic Weapon, or any class ability that specifies a weapon, like the Good Domain's Holy Lance ability, and can be enchanted with any weapon special ability, like Bane.
You can attack with a shield, as an off-hand attack, a main hand attack, or wielded with two hands.
It is also part of the Close Weapon Fighter group, and a Brawler can use it as part of a Brawler's Flurry.

A shield can be used and enchanted as a weapon.
The only detail that people disagree on is the gold cost of doing so.
Some people believe that having a "masterwork shield", and paying the 150gp price tag for such an item, is all that is required to enchant it as a weapon.
Others believe that in order to give a shield weapon enchantments you must pay the 300gp price tag that a masterwork weapon requires.
And then people argue whether or not you have to pay both masterwork costs, or just one.
But the fact that a shield is a weapon isn't up for debate.

Where have you been lately? On this venue, no cow is sacred, and everything is always up for debate.
