Question on Crits

Advice

Shadow Lodge

I'm a First time Fighter. Most of my other characters have never had to worry about criting. So my question is when concerning crits. Do you use the basic die roll or do you include modifiers when determining a crit is happening. For example if I roll a 17+3 on a weapon that has a crit range of 19-20. Does that mean I hit since with the modifier it brings it to a 20 or do I miss because the die roll is only a 17. Thanks for the help.

With a range of 19-20, and a die roll showing a 17, you do not threaten a crit. You may still hit but that depends on the modifiers you have and the AC of the foe.

Basically, if the die is showing a number within the weapon's range (ie. a 19 or 20 with a normal longsword) you threaten a crit. Any other number, may still hit, but is not a possible crit.

The die roll itself to determine if it's a crit threat or not. But you add the modifiers when you re-roll to confirm the crit.

To determine whether you get a critical hit there are two steps.

Step 1. Roll the right number; in you 19-20 crit range example the actual dice must show either 19 or 20(we call that a natural, or nat 19/20), the 17+3 is not adequate (this roll also has to of course be high enough to actually hit the opponent, remembering that a nat 20 is always an automatic hit).

Step 2. Confirm; roll a second time, this roll must be high enough to beat the target's AC but does not need to be a natural anything.

Awesome, Thanks for the help.
