Favored Class options

Rules Questions

So I have a question that some players and I have been discussing and we can't seem to come to a difinitive ruling on. When it comes to the choice of favored class, in the book it states the folowing:

"Each character begins play with a single favored class of his choosing—typically, this is the same class as the one he chooses at 1st level."

In the case of this wording, the use of the word "typically", does this refer to the half-elf ability to have two-favored classes; or does this allow other races, for example a dwarf, to at character creation choose Alchemist as his favored class, but take his first level in Fighter? This would mean that he does not get the favored class bonus at first level, but if at second level, he takes a level in alchemist, he gainst the favored class bonus?

It just means "typically", as in "popularly" or "commonly".

Your example of the Dwarf is correct.

Likewise a Half-elf Bard/Fighter/Cleric could choose Bard and Cleric as favored classes, and yet take their first level as Fighter.
