D&D Basic in Walmart

Is this shocking, or not?

I'm actually intrigued by the implications. It may be a meager start, but it is promising.

Well, since the discussion lasted a whole 3 days in January 2003 I don't know how promising it is.

I saw the Starter Set in a Wal-Mart a few months back, and you can order it, the core books, and the adventures over the Wal-Mart website.

The first D&D products I ever actually saw in person were the Moldvay B/X box sets, in a Magic Mart. (Ain't that ironic?)

Did I use the wrong link? Oh bother.

As far as it being available through their website, that's a bit less exciting, as you can get most RPG products by ordering them online already.

What makes me more interested in this is both the fact that it is more readily available, as well as the impact it could have on sales if every Walmart were to place an order on them.

HERE is the actual link that I meant to share.

I think it's great that they've got it for sale there. I think Wizards had 4E starter sets in Walmart as well, but there was a time, I'm told, when D&D was on a list of brands that was simply not allowed to be sold at Walmart.

People on that thread are wondering why it's with the trading card games and other collectibles and not in the toy and game section. The answer is that big stores like that aren't organized by the employees—they're essentially organized by the buyers for each department. And while many of you know that, this part may be surprising to more of you—the department that a product is *in* relates less to what the product *is* than it relates to who the buyer purchased the product *from*. In this case, the distributor who sells D&D to the mass market is the same distributor who sells them Magic: The Gathering, and since the collectibles buyer is the one who buys Magic, he's the one buying those D&D boxes, and that means they go in the collectibles section.

Similar things happen in bookstore chains that also have toys and games—if the person who buys the RPGs buys the Pathfinder Adventure Card Game, it gets stocked next to the Pathfinder RPG, but if the person who buys the board and card games buys it, it gets stocked with other board and card games.

At Toys R Us its in the game section, not in with the card games

That suggest that TRU likely has their board game buyer buying it. Does TRU carry the D&D board games?

no, the beginner set is all, have you considered selling the card game there? we actually do pretty well with those it seems, anecdotally that is, i don't have access to sales figures or any figures really, just a mook i am:-p

I think the card game buyer needs some pull from the customer side!

I've never understood card games :-)

Of any kind, well except maybe Go Fish and Uno :-)

Don't know why but my brain doesn't retain card game rules, except for the games above every time I play cards I have to relearn the rules all over again, its not a lot of fun :-)

You should play Fluxx; not because you won't have to re-learn the rules each time, but because everyone else WILL, so you won't be the odd one out. ;)

I'll just stick with Pathfinder, that I understand and fits quite well, also I literally have no clout at work I'm just part time muscle, mostly there to take heavy stuff to cars, but I'm also usually the one to straighten games:-)

This is now how I envision captain yesterday at Toys 'R' Us.

And this is what he looks like afterword.

(After all, he's "part time" muscle...)
