Upending Strike and Attacks of Opportunity

The Skirmisher Trick,

Upending Strike (Ex): The Ranger can use this trick as a free action just before he makes a melee attack. If the attack hits, he may make a free trip combat maneuver against the target.

Does the trip trigger an attack of opportunity if you don't have improved trip, nor a reach weapon?

The trip provokes if you don't have improved trip. The trip also provokes if you use a reach weapon (assuming you don't also have improved trip). The difference is with a reach weapon, there is probably no one adjacent to take advantage of the opening.
