Rules Questions and Gameplay Discussion

So, I have another pretty straightforward question.

What happens if you are at a location with a docked ship: You use your ships power (Abrogail's Fury: Discard a card from the Blessing deck to add 1d12 to your check to defeat a ship or bane) and the card you turned over is Brinebones?

We were totally flabbergasted by this Event and I even think my brain stopped functioning for a moment. You have to finish a check, before you can start a new check, but the moment Brinebones shows up, he is encountered. So I'm trying to add some d12's here, but this Dragon keeps breathing in my neck.

We resolved by just ignoring Brinebones for "one time" and just putting him beneath the top card, thus discarding a Blessing and our next card would be Brinebones.

But how is the correct order to resolve this?

I think you'd immediately encounter Brinebones (due to the scenario power), putting your previous encounter on hold.

Afterwards you'd advance the blessings deck, shuffle Brinebones back into what's left (both due to the scenario power), add your 1d12 to the die pool for the check you were about to do (you performed your discard, even if the scenario trumped it temporarily), and resume from there.

I'd do it slightly differently. Because of the "finish one thing before you start another" rule, I'd finish the encounter you were in, then as soon as that encounter was resolved I'd start the encounter with Brinebones.

Finish One Thing Before You Start Something Else. You do many things in a specific order, and you need to finish doing each thing before you do the next thing. You move before you explore, not after. If a spell used in a check can be recharged, finish the first check before you attempt your check to recharge it. If a villain requires two sequential combat checks, finish the first before starting the second. Don’t start a new process until you’ve finished the last one. (That said, if the game doesn’t specify an order for things, you decide the order.)

I'd go with Hawk on that one.

Yeah, that's what I thought too after ending the scenario.

Good to know for future runs.
