Flying Gargoyle / Grapple Question

Advice

Liberty's Edge

So I was GM a module where the Gargoyle swoops in and picks up his ally to take her to safety. However then one of the PCs tries to hold on.

The module didn't explain how the gargoyle carries the ally so I just assumed like a grapple check.

But then the other player grappled the person the gargoyle's ally. Eventually I calculated the weight and the gargoyle was able to swoop both of them up...

But at the end I wasn't sure if this was the correct way to handle this. What are the rules for this? What do y'all think?

Liberty's Edge

Anyone have any advice on this?

Gargoyle carrying ally - no resistance of the attempt, no grapple check. However, with the PC attempting to grapple, I'd rule an opposed grapple check for those involved, with the two gargoyles able to work together.

I think you handled it fine.

The only issue I can see is that grappled creatures typically can't move, but if the grappled creature is also grappled by another creature that is larger and flying, I can see letting the "big and flying" guy win out. Especially if the gargoyle had enough strength to carry both of them while flying (watch out for encumbrance penalties on that fly check, though).

I suppose you could have the gargoyle and the player make opposed grapple checks (against the ally, technically), and whichever one gets higher would control the grapple, determine how the grappled ally moves, etc.

Regardless, the player would always be able release the grapple as a free action to avoid getting carried away...or maybe plummet to his death if he didn't think that option all the way through.
