GenCon Alt Sessions that actually ran in previous years

Liberty's Edge 4/5 RPG Superstar Season 9 Top 16

Although GenCon is still a ways off, I like to start prepping early, due to having to plan the weight of miniatures, maps, terrain, computers, and books that I'll be taking back and forth from the hotel each day (not to mention making sure we can pack for 4 people in a car on the way to Indy.)

So, I'm going to try and plan alt scenarios well in advance. With that in mind, I thought I'd try to poll and see what scenarios actually got used in previous years (or at least what tiers.) Logic would say to me that low tier would be the likely choice, but not sure if that will hold true. (and if you have a low tier as your prime, wondering if a 3-7 would be the best choice as a backup.)

My alt scenarios have never happened, but I have always planned single map scenarios (Icebound Outpost, Temple of Empyreal Enlightenment) and a heavy RP favorite I can run almost from memory (The Disappeared, Severing Ties) that use minis I already carry for the planned events.

I'd say the best choices were scenarios already being offered, especially the new season 7 1-5, 6-10 The Wounded Wisp, or We Be Goblins. Scenarios that any random player could play. A late season 6 1-5 would also be good.

The season 7 1-5 will only be an option if you are signed up to run it, though. But, there seemed to be way more low tier players than anything else! I think last year Mike Brock suggested prepping only those scenarios that are actually being offered.

You might just run core and purchase the pdfs for the books and a tablet or iPad and get a Paizo generic flip mat. The scenarios could fit on an iPad too.

It folds nicely in a backpack. I wouldn't worry about exact mini selection. Just grab a handful of the old WOTC plastic minis. They won't break as easily as pewter or the WizKids Pathfinder Battles ones. Plus I've lost some minis at GenCon and other cons. Just my two coppers..

I guess I just feel with Con's any extra touches you can do to make it special are always a good thing. People pay big money to play there. And it's always more fun to see people's faces when accurate painted minis hit the table, from demons to Grandmaster Torch. I'm a big 3D terrain fan where I can do it too.

Totally understood. I've been thinking about building something this year. Last year, I had borrowed a friend's ship for We Be Goblins... that was a hit!

He did just that last year. Sadly, the one time I was asked to run an alternate scenario it was Scars of the Third Crusade which I had to decline. If you've played it or run it you know that it is very involved and open, not one to run off the cuff.

But the most likely scenarios are the low tier ones and maybe the 3-7 later in the con.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Having 5-08 The Confirmation and moreso 6-10 The Wounded Wisp prepped is always a good idea since those are both intro scenarios and available for credit replay. Anyone can sit and play them which obviously makes for excellent backup material.

Also, we had a rather large demand for the (Silverhex) Quests last year and due to logistical issues a lack of prepped GMs to run them. We are unsure when the six new quests will be available (probably not until GenCon) but they would be good choices to prep as backup. They are essentially since encounter quick-plays that link together for a larger story, so prep is minimal and last year we provided the materials (minis, maps, etc) although there is no guarantee that will happen again.

Other options would be the Beginner Box scenarios. We always have a good number of new players and people who just wander into the ballroom looking for something to play. They run rather quickly and like Quests, don't require a huge amount of prep. We provided materials for these last year as well, but again, no guarantee that will happen again.

These are just suggestions, of course. I'll leave it to Mike to make any specific recommendations for alternate material should your assigned event not run.

I get it... the one I was asked to run was Trial By Machine... which I ran absolutely cold. *shudder*

Though, I think I was asked to do a different one in slot 2, but before I could say "Yes", another GM grabbed it. I know it was something I had already ran, though.

I'm actually going to be running 4 sessions of Confirmation at GenCon this year (with the darklands in 3 dimensions). Assuming I shouldn't have problems of tables not making since it's so good for last minute signups, but you never know, especially with a Thursday morning sessions. (Last year I think about 30 tables didn't make during that session.)
